Redshirt junior leadoff man named one of 50 semifinalists for nation’s top shortstop award
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – Baylor baseball redshirt junior shortstop Travis Sanders has been named a semifinalist for the 2026 Brooks Wallace Award, as announced Wednesday by the College Baseball Foundation.
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named after former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980 and died of leukemia at the age of 27.
The top 50 shortstops in the country were named as semifinalists for the award on Wednesday, recognized for their combined offensive and defensive production so far in the 2026 season.
Through 40 games, Sanders has been a stalwart in the leadoff spot for the Bears, leading the team with a .353 batting average and 55 hits. He has racked up 16 multi-hit and eight multi-RBI efforts, slugging .513 with a team-high 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs. Sanders has driven in 28 runs and scored 31, while swiping a career-high 15 bases.
After making the move over to short from second base last season, Sanders hasn't missed a beat, fielding at a .963 clip. He has played a hand in 28 of BU's 35 double plays turned, which ranks second in the Big 12 and 24th nationally.
Sanders is one of six Big 12 shortstops named as semifinalists, joining Arizona State's PJ Moutzouridis, BYU's Ryder Robinson, Kansas State's Dee Kennedy, Texas Tech's Linkin Garcia and West Virginia's Matt Ineich.
Finalists for the 2026 Brooks Wallace Award will be announced at a later date, with the winner to be awarded following the 2026 season.
