BU earns 11th-straight doubles point
ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 11 Baylor (22-8) defeated the University of Utah (7-16) 4-1 on Thursday at the USTA National Campus in postseason play at the Big 12 Championships. As the No. 3 seed, Baylor moves on to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships and will play No. 2 seed TCU tomorrow at 1 pm CT.
Baylor captured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions, marking the 11th consecutive match in which the Bears have won the doubles point. In singles, they secured the match with wins on courts 1, 3, and 4. The Utes managed a singles win at No. 5, but it was not enough to overcome Baylor's overall performance.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor secured the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. At No. 3 doubles, Devin Badenhorst and Calvin Baierl triumphed over Lorenzo Esquici and AJ Deem, 6-4. The Baylor pair of Luc Koenig and Connor Van Schalkwyk clinched the doubles point with a gritty 7-6(4) win against Emmett Potter and Simeon Terziev at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match between Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz and Utah's Dante Teramo and Balthazar Huss ended narrowly in a 6-6(5-2) tie.
In singles action, Utah pulled a point back when Balthazar Huss defeated Alexandru Chirita 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. However, Baylor responded with Connor Van Schalkwyk, ranked No. 50, who claimed a three-set victory over Simeon Terziev, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
Devin Badenhorst, ranked No. 8, followed right behind for Baylor with a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles, defeating Dante Teramo 7-6(8), 6-4 for BU to go up 3-1. With the match on the line, Luc Koenig clinched the final point for Baylor, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 over Lorenzo Esquici at No. 4 singles.
