Bears maintain their lead at the top of the conference before next week’s contest with TCU
WACO, Texas – No. 15 Baylor women's basketball held off Arizona State late to secure a 67-64 win inside Foster Pavilion. The Bears moved to 21-4 on the year behind double‑figure scoring from Taliah Scott, Jana Van Gytenbeek and Kayla Nelms.
Baylor opened with a layup from Darianna Littlepage‑Buggs before the teams traded early baskets. After a scoreless stretch, Van Gytenbeek hit a three to put the Bears back in front. Baylor held ASU to 1-for-8 from the field during a five‑minute drought and took a 15‑9 lead into the second quarter, helped by a three from Scott and a jumper from Kiersten Johnson.
ASU scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to trim Baylor's lead, but a block from Kyla Abraham set up BU's first points of the period from Kayla Nelms in the paint. Van Gytenbeek added her second three of the half to rebuild the margin. The Sun Devils tied it at 26 in the final minute, but Scott hit three free throws to send the Bears into halftime up 29‑26.
Scott opened the third quarter with another three, and Johnson scored twice in the paint to stretch the lead to seven. Baylor held ASU without a field goal for more than three minutes and went up 43‑36 on an Abraham putback. ASU answered with an 8‑0 run to take its first lead, but Baylor regained control at the line with a pair of makes from Marcayla Johnson just as Van Gytenbeek closed the quarter with a steal and layup, giving BU a 53‑48 lead.
ASU tied it at 53 to start the fourth, but Scott responded with her fourth three of the evening. Nelms followed with four-straight points to reach double figures off the bench for just the third time this season.
After a three‑minute scoreless stretch for both teams, Scott scored on a drive to break the stalemate and BU held a 63‑62 lead entering the final minute. The Bears forced two stops in the closing seconds, and Abraham and Van Gytenbeek made four free throws to seal the three‑point win.
Scott finished with 17 points, going 7-of-7 from the charity stripe to lead the Bears offensively. Van Gytenbeek had 13 points, seven assists and a team-high pair of steals. Nelms added 12 points and four rebounds in a conference-high 15 minutes of playing time.
Littlepage-Buggs, the game-high rebounder, had 12 boards on the evening, with Bella Fontleroy pulling down nine off the defensive glass.
Baylor returns to Foster Pavilion on Thursday at 6 p.m. for their Go Gold game against conference rival TCU. The matchup will air live on ESPN and the Baylor Sports Media Network.
