Bears late surge not enough to boost them past the Cougars
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball was knotted at halftime with No. 22 BYU, but a slow start to the second half and a comeback surge that came too late caused the Bears to fall, 99-94, on Tuesday night.
Baylor (13-11, 3-9 Big 12) battled back from a double-digit second-half deficit but could not complete the comeback as No. 22 BYU (18-6, 5-3 Big 12) proved consistent from the free throw line and protected the lead it established early after the break.
Tounde Yessoufou powered Baylor's offense on the night, pouring in a career-high 37 points while logging all 40 minutes on the floor. His 37-point performance marks the highest total against a ranked opponent by a Baylor player in program history, the most points by a Bear since 2019's Makai Mason totaling 40 and the most by a BU freshman since 2008's LaceDarius Dunn who totaled 38 against Texas Tech.
Caden Powell delivered a highlight performance of his own, posting his highest point total in Big 12 play this season of 13. Cameron Carr added his share to the effort as well, finishing with 24 points on the night to bolster the Bears' offensive output, his second consecutive game with 20-plus points.
Featuring nine lead changes and five ties, the tightly contested matchup ultimately swung in BYU's favor midway through the second half. The Cougars used a decisive surge to build a 17-point advantage, a gap that proved just out of reach for the Bears despite a late-game push.
BYU was powered by a pair of 40-minute performances from AJ Dybantsa and Robert Wright III, who combined for 66 points. The Cougars also capitalized on Baylor's miscues, converting turnovers into 24 points, a decisive factor that ultimately swung the game in their favor.
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor will take a break from conference play to face No. 24 Louisville at Dickies Arena on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m CT.
