2024 SBC Freshman of the Year joins BU from Old Dominion
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's tennis picked up a big addition for the 2025-26 roster on Wednesday, signing Connor Van Schalkwyk from Old Dominion.
Van Schalkwyk comes to Waco from Norfolk after completing his first two years with the Monarchs with multiple honors. The Windhoek, Namibia, native helped guide ODU to 2025 Sun Belt Regular Season and Conference Champions for the third straight year. Van Schalkwyk has earned as high as No. 6 ranking in doubles and earned a qualifying bid to Waco this past year in the NCAA Individual Championships in singles and doubles.
"Connor is an addition to the family that will solidify the Bears as a true title contender next season," head coach Michael Woodson said. "He brings experience playing at the top of the lineup in singles and doubles while also having individual success at the highest level of collegiate tennis. He will be a calming presence in the locker room and on the court that brings out his absolute best in competition. We can't wait to work with him to help him reach his short-term goals with our team and long-term goals at the professional level. Baylor Men's Tennis got better today!"
In his sophomore season, Van Schalkwyk posted 17-11 singles record and 20-7 doubles record, playing primarily on Court 1 for both. Alongside qualifying to the NCAA Individual Championship in both singles and doubles, the sophomore contributed to an undefeated conference season for the Monarchs and NCAA team bid to the Winston-Salem Regional.
During his freshman season, Van Schalkwyk made himself known as Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, earning SBC First Team in Singles and Doubles. Van Schalkwyk was runner-up at the ITA Fall Nationals in doubles and qualified to the NCAA Individual Tournament in doubles later in the spring. Overall during his first year, he held records of 23-6 in singles and 20-13 in doubles.
Before competing collegiately, Van Schalkwyk held a career-high ITF Junior ranking of 36 in singles and doubles, where he won five singles titles and four doubles titles.
Van Schalkwyk will join the Bears in the fall of 2025 as a junior.
