Bears tie for ninth highest program margin of victory
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball earned a 57-point margin victory over Alcorn State Friday night at Foster Pavilion, 113-56.
With the help of the seventh program-best field goal percentage of 64.6, Baylor (8-2) put up 113 points and tied for 11th in program history, the most points since facing off against Mississippi Valley State (11/07/22). The 57-point margin of victory additionally tied for ninth in program history.
The contest between the Bears and Alcorn State (1-10) marked the fourth game this season that the Green and Gold had six players in double-digits with Cameron Carr (24), Isaac Williams IV (21), Michael Rataj (18), Tounde Yessoufou (17), Obi Agbim (14) and Dan Skillings Jr. (12) all earning double-figures.
Leading the team in rebounds was the Waco native, Caden Powell, who posted a career-high 16 rebounds and earned his 500th career rebound. Agbim also earned his 1,500th career point.
BU's win against the Braves marks the 50th straight home non-conference win. The Bears rank second in the nation behind Auburn in consecutive home non-conference victories.
The Bears seven fouls marked the lowest foul game this season.
THE RUNDOWN
Alcorn State earned the first point, but Baylor posted a 12-0 run for four minutes which included dunks from both Yessoufou and Williams. The Braves ended the Bears run with a fastbreak to cut the score 12-4 at the first media timeout.
Williams was brought to the line and made both his attempts. A fastbreak from Alcorn State earned them a basket from beyond the arc. Yessoufou's second dunk of the night and two free throws made from Carr added to the Bears total. The Braves got two jumpers and a free throw to make the contest 18-12 Baylor with 11:54 left in the half.
The Bears posted 11 points while the Braves scored three in three minutes. The Green and Gold forced four turnovers to help extend its lead. Two back-to-back field goals and a three pointers put a dent in Baylor's lead but a dunk from Powell made the lead 32-21 heading into the media timeout.
BU earned four free throws, two each from Agbim and Powell. A three-pointer, layup and jumper from Southern continued to chip at Baylor's lead, but a jumper from Yessoufou kept the lead at 38-28 with 3:35 left on the clock.
The Bears went on a 17-2 run for the last 3:35. A pair of threes from Agbim and one from Carr contributed to the run marking it the green and golds best run of the season. Carr's second dunk of the game made the fans inside Foster Pavilion electric. BU headed into the break up 55-30.
After the break, Baylor started hot with a jumper from Rataj and Carr's third dunk of the game. Alcorn State earned two points at the line, with both squads trading jumpers. The Bears went on an 8-0 run for 1:23 heading into the media timeout up 69-34.
Baylor kept their run going earning 17 more points while Alcorn State only put up three. The 25-3 run over almost six minutes saw a dunk from both Carr and Skillings Jr. as well as a basket from beyond the arc from Agbim. Baylor was up 86-37 with 11:25 left on the clock.
The Bears and Braves traded jumpers with Agbim making a three-pointer to earn his 1,500th career point. Rataj posted a field goal with the Alcorn State responding with three points of their own. A dunk from Powell and two fastbreak layups from Williams and Skillings Jr extended the Bears lead, but a jumper from the Braves cut the score to 99-44.
