MT Adds Another NCAA Qualifier in Singles with Van Schalkwyk at ITA Sectionals

Connor Van Schalkwyk becomes second Bear to qualify to NCAA Singles Championship
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Baylor men's tennis delivered a strong showing against a nationally ranked field, headlined by Connor Van Schalkwyk earning a qualifying berth to the NCAA Singles Championship after navigating a demanding singles draw at the ITA Sectionals held in Ann Arbor, Mich. from Nov. 6-9.
Van Schalkwyk now owns two bids to the NCAA Individual Championships after earning a doubles qualification with partner Zsombor Velcz from their victory at the ITA Texas Regionals. Van Schalkwyk joins Devin Badenhorst in the singles competition.
The NCAA Individual Championships will take place from Nov. 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
No. 60 Van Schalkwyk opened with a statement win in the Round of 32, outlasting TCU's Alonso Vivanco, 6–3, 6(4)–7, 6–2. He followed with a straight-sets victory over Oklahoma's Harazaki, 6-1, 7-5, advancing cleanly into the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals he fell to Arkansas' No. 123 Jakub Vrba despite a dominant first set, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Needing one more result to secure a regional qualifying slot, No. 60 Van Schalkwyk defeated teammate No. 101 Alexandru Chirita in the quarterfinal playoff, 6-3, 6-1, officially earning his bid to the NCAA Individual Championships.
Chirita authored an equally productive run to the quarterfinals. The No. 101 Bear knocked off Texas' Marionneau, 6-1, 6-4, and Texas A&M's Tokac, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to TCU's No. 81 Rolland De Ravel, 6-4, 6-2.
Elsewhere in the Round of 32, Baylor faced elite opposition across the board. No. 59 Zsombor Velcz pushed No. 10 Dominko (Notre Dame) in a tight 7-5 second set. Luc Koenig forced a third-set breaker before falling to No. 77 Pedrico Kravtsov (TCU), 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(3). Louis Bowden battled No. 67 Anthrop (Ohio State), ultimately dropping a competitive 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Baylor's top tandem, No. 5 Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig, opened with a controlled 6-3, 6-4 victory over Texas A&M's Pires/Tokac in the Round of 16. They were taken down in the quarterfinals by Ohio State's Carpico/Filin, 6-3, 6-3.
In the opposite half of the draw, L. Bowden/A. Chirita fell to No.19 Anthrop/Stearns (Ohio State), 6-4, 6-0, before entering the consolation bracket. They reached the consolation quarterfinal qualifying round, where they were narrowly clipped by No. 34 Georgiev/Svajda (SMU), 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
