Cameron Carr (16) leads six Bears in double-figures
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball earned a crucial win over Washington in a packed Foster Pavilion on Sunday night with a final score of 78-69.
RV/RV Baylor (2-0, 0-0) had six Bears in double-figures on the night with redshirt sophomore Cameron Carr leading the way with 16 points, his second consecutive double-figure game. Following behind were Tounde Yessoufou (13), Caden Powell (12), Dan Skillings Jr. (12), Isaac Williams IV (12) and Michael Rataj (11). The last time BU had six players in double-digits was versus St. John's (11/21/24).
Along with Powell's 12 points, the Waco, Texas, native put up 10 boards, earning his sixth career double-double and the first for BU this season.
Overall, Baylor put up a field goal percentage of 46.4 over RV/RV Washington's (2-1, 0-0) clip of 41.2-percent to capture the win.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears opened with the initial offensive possession after securing the tip-off, but it was the Huskies who struck first with a layup from Wesley Yates III. Rataj put Baylor on the board with two made free throws, marking the Bears' first points of the game. Baylor started cold, shooting just one-for-10 from the field and zero-for-seven from beyond the arc, allowing the Huskies to build an 11-4 lead with 15:46 remaining in the first half.
The Bears responded with a 7-0 run, taking their first lead of the night at 18-17 with 10:10 left in the first half. Rataj continued to lead the way, scoring his seventh point, already surpassing his total of five from game one. Baylor then caught fire, going on a 12-2 run over four minutes and hitting all four of their shots from the field to extend their lead to 25-19.
From there, the game settled into a back-and-forth rhythm for the remainder of the half. The Bears closed strong, getting a key defensive stop with 26 seconds left to head into the locker room up 38-32. Baylor outshot the Huskies from three by 21 percentage points, and while both teams finished the half shooting 44% overall, the Bears capitalized on turnovers, scoring six more points off takeaways, giving them the difference heading into the half.
The Huskies struck first after halftime, but Baylor quickly answered with back-to-back threes from Yessoufou and Skillings Jr. as the Bears opened the half shooting three-for-four from beyond the arc. Williams sparked the offense early in the second half, scoring five quick points after being limited to just one in the first period.
The game stayed close throughout, with Baylor's edge at the 11:52 mark (55-48) coming largely from its three-point shooting compared to the Huskies' two made three-pointers. The Huskies didn't connect on their first three of the game until Yates III hit one with 9:48 left, improving their mark to 1-for-13 from deep.
Williams continued his hot hand, hitting a jumper to put Baylor up nine with 9:24 remaining, surpassing his two-point outing from the previous game and finishing the game with 12.
A dunk from Powell at the 6:29 mark appeared to shift momentum in Baylor's favor, and the Bears extended their lead to a game-high 11 points with 3:37 to play following another Williams layup. The Huskies responded with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to five, making it 73-68 with just over two minutes left, but Skillings Jr. ended the push with a clutch free throw at the 1:25 mark. Yessoufou added another from the line with 55 seconds left to push the lead back to seven, and the Bears sealed the victory at the stripe. Powell capped off his performance with a double-double, anchoring Baylor's effort down the stretch.
