BU’s Rakhmanchik tallied 20-plus kills for a second-straight road match
MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 21 Baylor volleyball battled throughout but came up short in a four-set loss to Kansas State, 3–1, on Wednesday night at Morgan Family Arena.
The match was Baylor's first loss in the Little Apple since 2016, falling to 14-9 overall this season and 9-6 in Big 12 play.
Baylor got off to a slow start in the opening set, struggling to find rhythm against a sharp K-State attack. The Wildcats hit .235 while holding the Bears to .059, taking the first frame 25–17.
In set two, Baylor fell behind early, 4–1, but found its footing midway through the set. A 5-2 run fueled by Harley Kreck tied the set at 17, as Baylor closed strong to take the frame 25-23 and even the match.
The third set featured 12 ties and five lead changes in a back-and-forth battle. Baylor took a 23–20 lead late, but Kansas State rallied with five straight points to steal the set 25–23 and regain control.
The Bears fell behind 4–0 in the fourth and were forced to play from behind throughout the set. Baylor rallied to tie the score at 13 and again at 14, before the Wildcats responded with a 5–1 spurt to pull away and eventually close out the match 25-20.
As a team, Baylor hit .188 with 14 service errors, its second-highest total of the season. Rakhmanchik continued her standout freshman campaign with 23 kills, marking her second-straight road match with 20-plus kills and her fourth-consecutive match with at least 20 points (25). Setter Harley Kreck recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with 39 assists and a team-high 13 digs, while Gabbi Essix added three kills and nine blocks.
The Bears will return to action in a Saturday matinee at Houston at 1 p.m.
