
MT’s Connor Van Schalkwyk Named Big 12-SEC Challenge Tournament Champion

Junior transfer goes 3-0 in singles, including a top 40 ranked win
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's tennis wrapped up a strong weekend of competition at the Big 12–SEC Challenge, hosted at the Hurd Tennis Center, highlighted by standout performances from several Bears and a Tournament Champion effort from junior transfer Connor Van Schalkwyk.
The Bears battled student-athletes from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Arizona over the three-day tournament. Baylor collected seven singles victories and two doubles wins, with Van Schalkwyk's perfect 3-0 singles record against top competition earning him Big 12 Champion honors.
Van Schalkwyk, ranked No. 60 nationally, opened play on Friday with a commanding 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 37 Jonah Braswell (Texas), his second top-40 win of the fall. Calvin Baierl also picked up his first collegiate win in a straight-set victory, defeating Texas' Mariano Dedura-Palomero, 6-3, 6-1.
On Saturday, Van Schalkwyk rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Niksa Arsic (Texas Tech), while Luc Koenig and Baierl each added straight-set wins over Texas Tech opponents. In doubles, Koenig and Van Schalkwyk earned Baylor's first doubles win of the weekend, downing Togan Tokac and Tiago Pires (Texas A&M), 8-5.
Baylor closed the event strong on Sunday, as Van Schalkwyk capped his MVP performance with another comeback three-set victory, defeating Togan Tokac (Texas A&M), 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Koenig earned a ranked win of his own, downing No. 122 Tiago Pires (Texas A&M), 6-1, 6-3. The pair of Koenig and Van Schalkwyk also added another doubles victory, topping Shu Matsuoka and Niels Villard (Arizona), 8-4.
