Bears open Foster Pavilion with 40-point win over Lady Buffs
WACO, Texas – Baylor women's basketball defeated West Texas A&M, 86-46, on a stormy afternoon at the Paul and Alejandra Foster Pavilion along the banks of the Brazos River.
After winning the tipoff, Oklahoma transfer Kiersten Johnson scored the first points for Baylor, unofficially opening the season with a chance at a three-point play just 11 seconds in. The Bear defense started just as strong, holding the Lady Buffs scoreless for more than four minutes to open the game.
Returning WBCA honorable mention All-American Darianna Littlepage-Buggs led the way early with 11 first-half points and eight rebounds, helping the Bears take a 33-15 lead into the break.
The Bears broke the game open in the third, fueled by Auburn transfer Taliah Scott's 14-point quarter, going 5 of 10 from the floor with a 3-pointer on her way to 18 points on the night.
Baylor's 11-0 run in the final minutes sealed the game, with five total players finishing in double figures.
K. Johnson (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Littlepage-Buggs (14 points, 14 rebounds) joined Jana Van Gytenbeek (11 points, 10 assists) in recording double-doubles, marking Van Gytenbeek's return from a season-ending injury in last year's opener. Bella Fontleroy joined Scott and the double-double trio, finishing with 12 points.
New Bears Yuting Deng, Marcayla Johnson and Kiera Pemberton also saw the Mark and Paula Hurd Floor for the first time, combining for 11 points with sophomore Kayla Nelms securing five rebounds on Saturday.
The 2025-26 season officially tips off at Adidas Arena in Paris, France, where the Bears face No. 7 Duke at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3. The matchup will be the first televised game of the season and the first ranked-versus-ranked contest in the NCAA.
