WACO, Texas – When Auburn transfer Jackie Barrett Frazier can spread the wealth like she did Wednesday night, with four different Baylor hitters collecting double-digit kills in a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Arizona, "it makes my job really easy."
In addition to being the distributor from her setter position, dishing out 42 assists, Barrett Frazier had 10 digs, five kills, three blocks and two service aces to help the 19th-ranked Bears (9-3, 1-0) defeat the Wildcats (11-1, 0-1), 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-17, in Wednesday's Big 12 opener at the Ferrell Center.
"It's not like, who's the hot hitter that's going to get the kill here, because you can trust everyone in the rallies and in plays," Barrett Frazier said. "It was fun to just set everyone tonight, and it was fun to get (Allie) Sczech a little bit more involved on the push sets and the jack sets. And then, just the middles getting up in transition. That's something we've been working on that I thought they did really well today."
Facing an Arizona team that had dropped just four sets in its first 11 matches, the Bears dominated from first serve, racing out to a 12-5 lead in the opening frame and getting a combined 10 kills from middle blockers Alicia Andrew and Manuela Bibinbe.
"We're always trying to work on spreading our offense," said Andrew, who finished with a team- and season-high 14 kills, "and I think our passers did a really good. When we're in system, and we can run the middle, it's a really quick set, and it's hard to defend. The fact that we started running the middles from the get-go, that opens up the pins."
Sczech recorded six of her 13 kills in a back-and-forth second set that included 17 ties and eight lead changes. The Bears closed it out, 25-22, by scoring four of the last five points, including a pair of kills by Sczech and an attack error by the Wildcats' Jaelyn Hodge on set point.
Baylor struggled all night to contain Hodge, who finished with a match-high 22 kills to go with 10 digs, one block and a service ace. In a third set dominated by Arizona, she scored the final point in a 10-0 run with a kill, helping the Wildcats hit .440 in the set and clawing back within 2-1.
"There were two things," Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre said of the defense's issues with Hodge. "One, we didn't dig the ones I thought were diggable. That's volleyball, people hit hard at you. You've got to dig what's hit hard at you. So, I thought the first three sets, we were kind of shaky and not getting quality digs on those. And then two, good arm, she hits cross body. I did a bad job in our gym mimicking it a little bit. Our block definitely needed to line that up better."
Finishing it off with a 4-0 run, Barrett Frazier contributed on all four points, assisting on kills by Bibinbe and Kendal Murphy, getting a dump kill of her own and then combining with Bibinbe to block Hodge on match point.
"It's nice when your hitters are putting balls down, so the middle and their block are all just afraid of the pins," Barrett Frazier said. "And it leaves me a little bit more open there."
Starting with the first point of the match, there were six challenges (four by Baylor, two by Arizona), with all of them being overturned on review.
"What a whole different match it could have been," McGuyre said. "That's a swing of (six) that can go different ways. I thought overall, the officials did a great job, and the challenge review system did its job. It takes the animosity out of us coaches yelling at referees or whatever, because I'm not perfect and they're not perfect."
Elise McGhee and Bibinbe had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Lauren Briseño and Tehani Ulufatu combined for 30 digs on the defensive side.
In a quick turnaround, Baylor will face 14th-ranked Arizona State (12-1, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Ferrell Center. The Sun Devils have recorded five-straight sweeps, including Wednesday at TCU, since a 3-0 loss to Nebraska two weeks ago.
