WACO, Texas – Baylor might run out of basketballs at the rate that fifth-year senior guard Sarah Andrews is going.
Honored with a game ball before Wednesday's matchup at the Foster Pavilion for setting a new school record with 259 career 3-pointers made, Andrews knocked down four more from deep and scored a season-high 22 points to lift the Bears (8-2) to a 101-29 rout of the Texas Southern Tigers.
"When you have a veteran team like we do, there are 72,000 milestones that kids are approaching," said Baylor coach Nicki Collen, whose team won its fourth straight game and remained unbeaten at 6-0 at home.
"I've seen a different Sarah in practice. Time's running out. I just want to see her make the plays that she was making. . . . She made her pull-up when the pull-up was there. She hit the roller when the roller was there. She took the 3 when she was open. She looked comfortable and confident in the open court, making decisions."
One of the Bears' five double-figure scorers, Andrews recorded the 11th 20-point game of her career and first since an even 20 against Oklahoma on Feb. 7, 2023.
"It was a lot of confidence," said Andrews, who was 9-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from outside the arc. "I scored at almost three levels tonight. I didn't just settle for the 3. So, to finally see the ball going in, it was great."
Collen said her favorite play of Andrews was when she attacked, reached out and finished with her left hand for Baylor's first field goal of the night. The Bears turned it over four times and missed their first four shots, falling behind 4-3 in the first three minutes.
"I think we just started off slow," Andrews said. "We were a little confused on the first play. We started off on the wrong side. But once we got going, we got going."
Baylor scored 20 unanswered points, including 3-pointers by Jada Walker and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, during a three-minute stretch that helped the Bears go up 31-8 at the end of the first period.
Other than a poor-shooting third quarter, when they Bears scored only eight points, they were completely dominant in the other three quarters. Ultimately, Baylor's 31 first-quarter points were two more than the Tigers (1-5) scored in the entire game.
Four other players scored in double figures for Baylor, led by senior guard Jada Walker with 17 points and six assists. Aaronette Vonleh scored 13 points in an efficient 14 minutes, Yaya Felder had 12 points and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs had her third-straight and fifth double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Junior center Kyla Abraham added six points and a career-high 10 boards, helping the Bears to a commanding 61-33 rebounding edge on the Tigers (1-5).
"Me and (assistant coach Sophia Young Malcolm) talk about it all the time," Abraham said. "I just have to see the ball go in the hoop one time, and it just goes from there. A lot of times, I'll get a rebound and go back up out of balance. I just have to come down with it and calm down for a second."
Texas Southern was held to just two points in the fourth quarter, going 0-for-16 from the floor, 0-for-5 from outside the arc and 2-of-4 from the line.
Junior college transfer Waiata Jennings hit a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers and scored eight points in 14 minutes off the bench.
Continuing a five-game homestand, Baylor will host UNLV (6-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday before taking a 10-day break for final exams.
