WACO, Texas – Earlier in the season, Auburn transfer Jackie Barrett Frazier "was on fire" with her quick dumps, racking up 28 kills in Baylor volleyball's first eight matches. But with defenses committing to it, "we got away from it," coach Ryan McGuyre said.
Wednesday night, Barrett Frazier was scalding hot, recording 17th-ranked Baylor's first triple-double in 15 years with 10 kills, 23 assists and 16 digs from her setter position in the Bears' 3-1 win over Iowa State, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 25-16.
"A lot of it was a part of the game plan," said Barrett Frazier, who had 43 double-doubles in her four seasons at Auburn. "We talked about spreading the offense, getting our middles to the right-side pins. And that was going to open up the dump for me. Or put the middles close to me and have them jump with me; and get one-on-one for them as well. But yeah, they weren't stopping it at first, so it was really fun to be able to be an offensive threat."
She wasn't just a threat, Barrett Frazier was a weapon of mass destruction, hitting .562 with only one error in 16 swings and helping the Bears (14-6, 6-3) win their fourth in a row. Losing its third in a row and fourth in the last five matches, Iowa State fell to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in league play.
"They've had some injuries, but they play hard, and they've got three great liberos all rotating through and going back there," McGuyre said of the Cyclones. "So, it's hard to get those down on the floor. You've got to have some good force to do that. Her challenge is she's got to lead us in hit percentage. And she did that. We don't want her to just throw it over where they can dig it. But as long as she leads us in hit percentage, we encourage it."
With her career night, Barrett Frazier became the eighth different Baylor player to record a triple-double and the first since setter Taylor Barnes had the last of her four-career triple-doubles on Nov. 14, 2009, against Kansas.
Elise McGhee had a team-high 13 kills and three aces, but she also had five of Baylor's 15 service errors on the night.
"We kind of live and die by it," McGuyre said of the serves. "Tonight, it faded a little bit. We've got to get that back under control. That, to me, is certainly just a focus thing."
Alicia Andrew and Tori Davis each had seven kills, a career best for Davis, who also assisted on four of Baylor's 10 blocks.
"We really wanted to focus on the block and making sure that we're putting up a good block every single time that they're swinging," Davis said.
Baylor will wrap up a homestand with a matchup against Colorado (10-12, 3-7) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Ferrell Center. The Buffaloes have dropped four in a row and were swept by TCU Wednesday night in Fort Worth.
WACO, Texas – The 17th-ranked Baylor volleyball team defeated Iowa State in four sets, 3-1, on Wednesday night during the pair's sole match of the season.
With the win, Baylor (14-6, 6-3) extended the series lead against the Cyclones (9-11, 3-6) to 33-26 all-time.
Although head coach Ryan McGuyre arrived at "Space Night" in the Ferrell Center wearing a Mandalorian costume and carrying a green light-up sword, he wasn't the only one bringing the energy. Led by Jackie Barrett Frazier, the Bears met an aggressive Iowa State team with fierce determination, winning the first set 25-23 and claiming the second 25-18. The third set saw a Cyclone victory at 25-19, but Baylor rallied to secure the night's victory with the fourth set ending 25-16.
Barrett Frazier claimed a triple-double with 16 digs and a season-high 10 kills alongside her 23 assists, while Elise McGhee led the team with 13 kills. Lauren Briseño served up two aces on the night, placing her one away from the 80th of her career.
It was the first triple-double by a Baylor player since 2009 when BU Hall of Famer Taylor Barnes (10k-12d-40a) accomplished the feat at Kansas (11/14/09). Barrett Frazier is the eighth different Bear to record one in program history.
