Bears send Buffaloes back to Boulder

WACO, Texas – Recording nine of her match-high 24 kills in the first set, including two in a closing 3-0 run, senior outside hitter Elise McGhee helped 17th-ranked Baylor pull out a tight first set en route to a 3-0 sweep of the Colorado Buffaloes Friday night at the Ferrell Center.
"It's probably just Coach Mac (Ryan McGuyre) yelling at me to hit the ball harder all the time," said McGhee, who had the fourth-most kills ever by a Baylor player in a three-set match.
"I think (setter Jackie Barrett Frazier) is doing a great job of producing great sets, and then I have to keep myself in rhythm, no matter what. Lauren (Briseño) is doing great with out-of-system balls. And then, it's just reminding myself to hit hard wherever I'm at."
In their first conference matchup in 14 years, Baylor won its fifth-straight in improving to 15-3 overall and 7-3 in the Big 12, while Colorado (10-13, 3-8) has dropped five in a row in its return to the league after a 13-year run in the Pac-12. The Bears, who have climbed to fourth in the Big 12 standings, swept the Buffaloes, 26-24, 25-16, 25-20.
"Another huge team effort tonight," McGuyre said. "Some people were dialed in, some people had some ups and downs and struggled through it. I thought the way Lauren really willed us to victory in the first set with tough serving, great digging, consistent passing, some great coverage balls. Those are things that don't show up on the stats that allowed us to take big swings down the stretch."
A back-and-forth first set included 15 kills and five lead changes before Baylor survived a match point and reeled off three in a row with a combo block by Alicia Andrew and Barrett Frazier sandwiched between a pair of McGhee kills.
"Tonight, we had some really outstanding individual performances," McGuyre said. "But then as a whole, you've got to win ugly sometimes. I kind of felt like we won ugly, with some stars shining. Our best players were at their best tonight, so that helps."
After a slow start, junior opposite Allie Sczech collected half of her 10 kills in the second set, including two in a pivotal 4-0 run that pushed the lead to 21-14. Grad transfer Jennifer Bolden came off the bench to record a block and a kill late in the set before the Bears won it, 25-16, on a service error by the Buffs.
"I think everyone was in a rhythm together, and especially the setter-hitter rhythm," Sczech said. "I just think it's Jackie, honestly. I feel like the way we've been able to connect with her has been great."
Colorado took leads of 7-3 and 11-6 in the third set, but Baylor came back to tie it up at 14-14 on Briseño's 80th career service ace (fifth-most in the rally scoring era) and then closed out the set and the match with a 5-1 run that included four kills by McGhee off sets from Barrett Frazier.
"Elise and Jackie, together, really took over that third set," McGuyre said.
Barrett Frazier led the way with 28 assists in helping the Bears hit .324 for the match, Victoria Davis added five kills and a team-high six blocks, and sophomore defensive specialist Tehani Ulufatu had two aces and 11 digs.
"Just a sophomore in a big role," McGuyre said of Ulufatu. "Her voice is really good. She was one, we didn't need to hold her hand to help her through it. She was ready, made plenty of great plays. Two aces, no missed serves. And she was very trustworthy and reliable tonight."
After playing four of five at home in its current five-match winning streak, Baylor will go on the road for three of its next four, including a showdown with league-leading and eighth-ranked Kansas (19-1, 10-0) on Nov. 16 in Lawrence.
Next week, the Bears go on the road to play Texas Tech (11-11, 3-7) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Lubbock before hosting UCF (8-10, 1-8) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

The Bears (15-6, 7-3) met the Buffaloes (10-13, 3-8) in Big 12 play for the first time since 2010, and made quick work of the Buffs, winning in three sets behind a big 24-kill night from Elise McGhee. BU finished set one at 26-24, set two at 25-16 and ended it with a third frame at 25-20.
McGhee's 24 kills are the fourth-most by a Baylor player in a three-set match.
Along with McGhee leading in kills, Jackie Barrett Frazier had 28 assists and Victoria Davis had six blocks. Both Barrett Frazier and Tehani Ulufatu had two aces, while Ulufatu and Lauren Briseño each had 11 digs.
Briseño served one ace which was the 80th of her career, enough to tie the No. 5 spot on Baylor's rally scoring service aces list.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The Bears started hot in the first set, jumping out to a 2-0 lead behind kills from Elise McGhee and Allie Sczech. Baylor's rhythm continued early, and after an ace from Tehani Ulufatu, the score was 7-4. The Buffalos began to battle back with a few impressive points, coming within one at 8-7. McGhee got the Bears back on track with her fourth kill of the set, making the score 10-8. The Buffaloes were able to put together a scoring run and took an 11-10 lead: their first lead of the set. When it seemed like all momentum was on Colorado's side, Kendal Murphy delivered a beautiful kill just inside the line to cut the deficit to one at 14-13. Ulufatu then tallied her second service ace of the night and tied the set up at 14. The score remained tight for a while, neither team was able to snag any momentum. The score was 19-19 until McGhee tallied her seventh kill of the set, giving Baylor the lead. The Bears and Buffs traded points down the stretch until Baylor was able to close out the set at 26-24 behind a final kill from McGhee.
Set 2
Baylor looked to carry their momentum into the second set, and jumped out to an early 4-2 lead behind a pair of aces from Jackie Barrett Frazier. McGhee tallied her 10th kill of the night and helped Baylor grow their lead out to 6-4. The energy continued, and the lead grew to 9-5 after a kill from Sczech. Colorado was able to stop the bleeding and climb back into the set, down one at 9-8. After a wild rally, McGhee was able to grow the lead to 12-10 with a kill. McGhee's big night continued, as she tallied another to make the score 14-11. As the set continued, the Bears continued to gain momentum, and Sczech's eighth kill of the night helped Baylor climb out to a 19-14 lead. BU never slowed down and took the set in commanding fashion, 25-16.
Set 3
One set away from victory, Baylor came out firing. Alicia Andrew registered her second kill of the night to kick off the scoring for the Bears. After a service error from Colorado, the Bears led 3-2. The Buffaloes, with their backs against the wall, were able to put together a run to take a 7-3 lead. Victoria Davis was able to break Baylor out of their slump, as she recorded a kill to cut the score to 7-5. The Buffaloes grew their lead to 11-6 after a block but McGhee helped cut the deficit, closing in at 11-8. After another wild volley, McGhee made Colorado pay and tallied yet another kill. A block from Sczech and Davis brought Baylor within a point, and Lauren Briseno's 80th career ace tied it at 14. The Bears finally had a spark in the set, and a kill from Murphy gave them a 17-16 lead. Davis' fourth block of the night helped stretch the Bears' lead out to 20-17. Baylor was able to capitalize closed out the set and match at 25-20.
