WACO, Texas – Even with an "All-American kind of match" from Elise McGhee that included a career-high 30 kills and six aces, it took an incredible 9-0 closing run for 23rd-ranked Baylor volleyball to pull out a five-setter and snap a four-game losing streak to No. 18 TCU Friday night before an electric crowd at the Ferrell Center.
Setter Jackie Barrett Frazier had three of her four aces and McGhee chipped in with three kills in that nine-point scoring run to finish off an exhilarating 3-2 win over the visiting Frogs, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8.
"Really feel like Elise kind of had an All-American match," said Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre, whose team improved to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in conference with its third-straight win. "I think she's an All-American in how she plays and competes. But she's doing it from the service line, with the blocking and a 30-kill night. That's pretty impressive against a top-ranked team like TCU. So, I liked her composure."
Not only did she set career highs with her Big 12 Player of the Week-worthy performance, McGhee became the first NCAA Division I player in over three years to tally as many as 30 kills and six aces in the same match. The last time was UNLV's Mariena Hayden with 30 kills and seven aces in a 3-2 win over Wyoming on Oct. 21, 2021.
"One thing (associate head coach Joshua Walker) said, I don't remember what game it was, but just that we need more players that are going to play their best and be consistent," said McGhee, whose previous highs were 22 kills and five aces. "That was something I really wanted to do moving forward. Tonight, I feel like everyone had huge moments of shining."
That included sophomore outside hitter Kendal Murphy, who had a career-high 16 kills to go
with eight digs and a pair of blocks. Junior opposite Allie Sczech chipped in with nine kills and helped close it out on a combo block with Alicia Andrew on match point.
"This was definitely a personal match for us, having lost earlier in the season," Murphy said. "So, going out, especially on our home court, and having a great battle like we did . . . the matches that are hard are so much more satisfying to win."
In a back-and-forth first set, the Bears were finally able to break away and closed it out, 25-23, on kills by Sczech and Manuela Bibinbe. Although the score remained tight in the second set, the Frogs (14-5, 6-3) never trailed and got five of Melanie Parra's 24 kills in finishing it off, 25-22.
Baylor returned the favor in the third set, leading the whole way and going up 2-1 by getting five kills and a block from Murphy. With a chance to end it in the fourth, the Bears took a 17-15 lead with a 4-0 run that included a pair of Murphy kills, but TCU forced a fifth set by winning 10 of the next 11 points and taking it 25-18 on an Evan Hendrix kill.
In the winner-takes-all fifth, there were three lead changes before McGhee started the Bears' impressive 9-0 run with a kill. Serving it out, Barrett Frazier recorded three aces in a stretch of five points, then Sczech and Andrew blocked the Frogs' Jalyn Gibson on match point to finish this one off.
"Really good service run from Jackie there at the end," McGuyre said. "Tough serves to get them out of system. And then, our defense was there, and we were able to take some big finishing swings, which is something we've been focused on and working on doing. Proud of the overall team effort and how we've been getting after it in practice this week."
McGuyre improves to 2-6 against his former Baylor assistant coaches, including a 2-4 mark versus third-year TCU head coach Jason Williams.
"He's a phenomenal coach and a big testament to all the success that we had while he was here," McGuyre said of Williams. "We've always said, the better team wins the second (matchup). Because if you win the first one, everyone's making adjustments. Who's getting better as you move forward? . . . Regardless of who's ranked, these are the kinds of matches we've come to expect."
Baylor will finish out a stretch of four out of five at home, hosting Iowa State (9-9, 3-4) on Wednesday and Colorado (10-11, 3-6) next Friday.
WACO, Texas – The 23rd-ranked Baylor volleyball team faced off with 18th-ranked TCU for the second time this season, coming away with the five-set win, 3-2.
The Bears (13-6, 5-3) came into the match with TCU (14-5, 6-3) on a four-match losing streak against the Frogs but snapped it with the five-set win. BU took the first 25-23, the Frogs had the second 25-22, then Baylor again in the third at 25-20 before TCU took the fourth 25-18. It was all Bears in the fifth set with a 15-8 finish.
Elise McGhee led the match for the Bears with a career-high 30 kills and six aces, while Jackie Barrett Frazier had 45 assists, Lauren Briseño tallied 24 digs and both Victoria Davis and Alicia Andrew had four blocks.
McGhee's stat sheet was the first time in three years that a DI player had 30 kills and six aces in the same match, the last being UNLV's Mariena Hayden on Oct. 21, 2021.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The first set began with some back-and-forth action between the two bitter rivals. A pair of kills allowed TCU to climb out to a 6-4 lead, and it seemed as if a scoring run was on the way, but a kill by Kendal Murphy gave Baylor some life. The Bears clawed back behind a handful of kills by Elise McGhee, making the score 10-9 Frogs. The gap remained razor thin until a service ace by McGhee shifted the momentum in Baylor's direction, 15-13 Bears. Both teams traded points for the rest of the way. After TCU showed some fight, a Horned Frog service error brought Baylor closer to a set victory, 23-17 Bears. Baylor was able to put the set away 25-20, bringing them one set away from a win.
Set 4
With victory in sight, Baylor began the fourth set with some energy, but it was TCU who found a rhythm early. The Frogs jumped out to an early 6-3 lead, but neither team could pull away early on, and the score remained tight most of the early set. With the score at 11-10 TCU, McGhee tallied her 24th kill of the night to tie it up at 11. Both teams kept trading points, and no separation was to be found down the stretch. A pair of blocks by Barrett Frazier and Murphy forced TCU to call a timeout as Baylor lead 17-15. Out of the break, the Frogs came back with some momentum, taking an 18-17 lead, forcing Baylor to take a timeout of their own. TCU continued their hot streak out of the break and grew their lead to 21-17. The Bears got some life back after Murphy delivered a clutch kill for her 14th of the night. TCU didn't flinch though and closed out the set 25-18.
Set 5
In a winner take all set 5, both teams battled through intense volleys early, with no team able to claim a clear advantage. Both teams exchanged leads early and struggled to pull away. TCU was able to jump out to an 8-6 lead before a media timeout. McGhee struck again with her 28th kill of the night, and a pair of aces from Barrett Frazier elevated Baylor to a 10-8 lead.
