Bears will face Pepperdine, San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara Thursday-Saturday
MALIBU, Calif. – The ninth-ranked Baylor volleyball program is primed for the Pepperdine Asics Classic, taking place from Sept. 1-3 at Pepperdine's Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Bears (1-1) will face three teams over the three days, including (RV) Pepperdine (2-1), San Diego State (2-1) and UC Santa Barbara (2-1), respectively. This is the 24th iteration of the Asics tournament. The Waves and BU will play at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday.
Baylor is coming off the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge, splitting the two weekend matches, falling to No. 5 Minnesota and winning in five sets over No. 3 Wisconsin. The Bears rose from then-No. 16 in the rankings to No. 9 after the split weekend.
Freshman Averi Carlson and senior Lauren Harrison earned All-Tournament honors for the Challenge, and Carlson followed it up with her first-career weekly award from the conference, earning Big 12 Rookie of the Week. She had 78 assists on the weekend, the most out of any setter in the tournament, and was one of just two freshmen to be named All-Tournament.
Over the matches with the Gophers and Badgers, multiple BU players had their first taste of play in the green and gold, including redshirt freshman Riley Simpson, freshmen Carlson, Alexis Dacosta, Sophia Keene and Allie Sczech and transfer Mallory Talbert. Simpson showed out at the net, recording 16 kills against Wisconsin and 25 overall. Also impressing were Keene with 15 digs over the pair of matches and Talbert with seven overall blocks. Senior Kara McGhee was once again a mainstay on defense, with 11 blocks for the weekend.
Pepperdine faced Tulsa, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and then-No. 1 Nebraska in the Ameritas Players Challenge, where the Waves went in four sets with the Golden Hurricane to win, swept TAMUCC and fell in three to Huskers.
The Sept. 1 match with Pepperdine will be streamed on the WCC Network. Live stats for all three matches can be found here.
The BU squad has spent the first two days of the trip in Malibu enjoying head coach Ryan McGuyre's stomping grounds, going through LAPD training with his brother, Brent McGuyre, the captain of the LAPD; taking a trip to the Hollywood sign; strolling the Walk of Fame; walking the Santa Monica Pier and more.
