THE RUNDOWN
MADISON, Wis. – No. 10 Baylor volleyball climbed back in the fourth set to upset No. 7 Minnesota on Friday night in UW Field House, completing the first match of the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge. The Bears improve to 1-0 on the season with the win.
The starters for the Bears were Shanel Bramschreiber, Marieke van der Mark, sisters Elise McGhee and Kara McGhee, Yossiana Pressley, Hannah Sedwick, and Avery Skinner.
SET ONE
The Bears came out on top for the first set, 26-24. What began with two Minnesota aces and a kill, ended in Baylor's favor. Kills from Harrison, Pressley, and Kara McGhee pushed the Bears forward. Though it was back and forth the entire set, a four-point run early on bolstered the morale. At 24-23 Baylor, Minnesota took a time out. They came back in and tied it up, but a Pressley kill and an attack error by the Gophers ended the set.
SET TWO
BU just couldn't find their rhythm in the second set, and fell 16-25. They started off with kills from Harrison and Kara McGhee, but then saw a 5-0 run from the Gophers. A service error ended it briefly, only for Minnesota to come back with another 5-0 run. The set would end on a kill from Minnesota's Stephanie Samedy.
SET THREE
The groove was returned to the Bears and they took the set from the Gophers to the tune of 25-17. Both van der Mark and Pressley jumped into double-digit kills after taking turns attacking. Van der Mark recorded seven in that set, with Pressley recording four.
SET FOUR
The fourth set seemed to be in Baylor's control for its entirety, but the scoreboard said otherwise. The Bears would trail by no more than two throughout the set, but were always just a step behind the Gophers. Avery Skinner found her time to shine, with multiple kills in the set and multiple blocks. Specifically, her block at 25-25 was a major turning point. The Bears and Gophers kept matching each other, but Baylor was buckled in. Up 27-26, a block assist from Skinner and Kara McGhee won it for BU.
BEAR BITES
No. 2 Wisconsin defeated TCU on Friday in three sets. The Badgers were unanimously picked to win the Big Ten Conference title for the second-straight season. They return more than 81% of their 2020 statistics, including over 80% of their service aces, digs, kills and blocks. Players to watch for the Badgers are Dana Rettke, Devyn Robinson, and Lauren Barnes.

QUOTABLE – Head coach Ryan McGuyre
"Fun, exciting team effort tonight. We had great things all the way around from so many different areas. I thought our depth really pulled us through. Lauren Harrison brought in some much-needed energy and kills when she came in off the bench. I'm really proud of Marieke and her versatility, playing middle tonight when she's been opposite her whole career. She maintained that energy and enthusiasm. Lauren Briseño came in off the bench and settled down our passing. The bench's energy fed the team on the court to come back from 24-21 against a phenomenal Minnesota team, a well-coached team. That's a significant accomplishment. It's early for both teams as we're trying to get better, but our bench really pushed our girls through to steal that win at the end of the fourth set."
"It doesn't get any easier tomorrow. Wisconsin played a lot less points than we did today, gets a little more extra time for rest, and it's in their house. We're underdogs once again but we relish the role and we hope it turns into another great volleyball match."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will return to the road and take on Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, on September 3.
