Baylor volleyball would like nothing more than another shot at fourth-seeded Wisconsin after losing to the Badgers in the 2019 Final Four and earlier this season in Madison.
But, in a survive-and-advance NCAA Tournament, it's all about the match in front of you. The fifth-seeded Bears (20-5) will host the first and second rounds, facing Southland Conference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (19-9) at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ferrell Center.
As Kentucky transfer Avery Skinner put it: "Every team, you don't know what's going to happen going in. So, there are no easy games."
While A&M-Corpus Christi is 0-6 all-time against Baylor and hasn't won a set in three previous NCAA Tournament appearances, the Islanders have only dropped two sets in a seven-match winning streak going into Thursday's match.
Washington State (19-11), which swept Oregon and split with Washington, faces Big Sky champion Northern Colorado (24-6) in the other first-round match at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The two winners meet in Friday's 7 p.m. second-round matchup with a berth in the region semifinals on the line.
"When we do film, it's really obvious that these teams are good," said Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre, whose team is making its sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. "Moving forward, everyone's good, and you don't get to dream about going too far if you don't take care of business today."
Led by Big 12 Setter of the Year Hannah Sedwick and first-team all-conference picks Skinner, Yossiana Pressley and Lauren Harrison, the Bears are also riding a seven-match winning streak, winning 19 of their last 21 after a 1-3 start.
"Our team is hungry and eager to compete and represent Baylor," McGuyre said. "We are extremely invested in one another and ready to battle one round at a time."
McGuyre said one of the keys in making a deep NCAA Tournament run is making sure that "any match doesn't go longer than it should." When the Bears made their first NCAA Final Four in 2019, they lost just two sets in beating Sacred Heart, USC, Purdue and Washington before losing to Wisconsin, 3-1, in the national semifinals.
"We're different than football and basketball where they do have a clock," McGuyre said. "We can win in 60 minutes, or it can go 2 ½ hours. It's to our benefit to be really sharp and crisp in every single match so that we're not giving away a set or playing extended points or letting rallies extend because we could have terminated the ball sooner or blocked a ball better. That all adds up, keeping you fresher in the tournament. Every point matters."
A&M-CC, making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, is led by Southland Conference Player and Setter of the Year Faith Panhans and two-time SLC Libero of the Year Carissa Barnes, who leads the nation in digs per set with a 6.51 average.
Baylor is 5-1 at home in the NCAA Tournament, winning four-straight in 2019 and getting upset by Colorado in the second round in 2017.
Thursday night's match will be streamed by ESPN+, with Lincoln Rose and former Baylor All-American Katie Staiger Smith calling the action.
WACO, Texas – No. 5 seed Baylor volleyball starts its run in its sixth-straight NCAA Tournament on Thursday when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. in the Ferrell Center for the First Round.
The Bears (20-5) play Southland Conference champion TAMU-CC (19-9), while Northern Colorado (24-6) faces Washington State (19-11) at 4:30 p.m. earlier in the day. The two winners advance to a second-round match at 7 p.m. Friday with a trip to the region semifinals of the line.
Already recording its sixth-straight 20-win season, BU is certainly battle-tested. Out of the Bears' 25 matches this season, 19 of them were against teams that are now in the tournament, going 14-5 overall. Seven of the Big 12's nine squads have made the tournament.
Baylor is 8-5 in the NCAA Tournament under Ryan McGuyre and 11-9 overall going into the First and Second Rounds.
The Bears have faced all three teams coming to Waco in previous seasons and are 6-0 all-time against the Islanders. TAMU-CC has won only three sets in those six matches.
This is the third time BU has hosted at least one portion of the NCAA Tournament, with the other two coming in 2017 for the first and second rounds and 2019 for both the first and second rounds and the regionals.
The other four teams in Baylor's quadrant of the bracket are Stanford, Iowa State, South Dakota and No. 12 Minnesota. The winner of both the Waco and Minneapolis First and Second Rounds will move on to the Regionals portion of the Tournament.
Fans are encouraged to visit Baylor's Tournament Central for all relevant information regarding the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Links for broadcasts, radio streams and live stats will be posted there as they become available.
A full recap and final stats will be posted to BaylorBears.com as well as the Tournament Central page after the conclusion of Baylor's matches. Final stats for the WSU-UNC matchup will be posted there as well.
Former Baylor All-American Katie Staiger Smith and broadcaster Lincoln Rose will be on the call for Thursday night's match on ESPN+.
