After opening conference play with three-straight wins against Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas Tech, the 23rd-ranked Baylor Bears (7-2-3, 3-0-0) are hitting the road for games against Kansas (5-8-1, 0-4-0) and Kansas State (6-6-0, 1-2-0) in the Sunflower State.
Sitting alone at the top of the Big 12 standings and cracking the coaches' poll for the first time this season, the Bears will play Kansas at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan., and then K-State at 1 p.m. Sunday at Buser Family Park in Manhattan, Kan.
"We like being on the road," sophomore forward Mackenzie Anthony said, "because we're with the team and it's just nice getting to see new places."
Baylor coach Paul Jobson said a balanced schedule has worked well, alternating weekend road trips with a pair of home games. The Bears have played exactly half of their first 12 games at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"Our schedule has been pretty balanced to where we've got a great back and forth of home and road," Jobson said. "We're not on the road, consecutively, too long, and not home too long. I think it's been a good balance. So, when we get the opportunity to go on the road, we're ready to go, because it's been a while since we've been there."
The Bears are off to their first 3-0 start in conference play since 1998, when they won the first Big 12 regular-season title in program history.
"We know it's nine games (in the Big 12 schedule), and we've got to put together a good match every time we go out there," Jobson said. "It's one game at a time. To be 3-0 right now is great, it's awesome, it's a great way to start. You've put yourself in a good position. But, if we look too much at that, we'll lose sight of the next match."
While Kansas and Kansas State are both sitting near the bottom of the league standings and in jeopardy of not making the eight-team Big 12 Tournament that starts Oct. 31 in Round Rock, Jobson said, "I think we've got a great perspective that Kansas and Kansas State are both really good teams."
The Wildcats defeated the Jayhawks, 2-1, in overtime last Thursday, while three of KU's four conference losses have each been by one goal.
"They're two really good, really gritty teams," said fifth-year senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt. "Obviously, they're going to be at home, so they're going to be extra-hyped to play, because they want to defend their home turf. But, we're just excited to play two quality opponents and hopefully get good results out of it."
Baylor is coming off a 3-2 home win over Texas Tech last Thursday, when the Bears rallied from a 2-1 second-half deficit. In the 79th minute, Gabby Mueller took a cross from Anthony and scored from distance with a ball that hit off the crossbar.
"It was such a fun and exciting game," said Wandt, who extended the school record with her 51st win. "Those are the types of games that we want to be in and we want to play for. I think on both ends, it was really exciting, but it was huge to be able to get that win after coming back from being down."
With lofty goals of winning a Big 12 title and "contending for NCAA championships," Jobson said the key for his Baylor team is not to "focus on those things" and just continuing to grind every day.
"You can get distracted and tirp up on those things and forget the work that it takes day in and day out to be a really good team," Jobson said. "They're putting in the work and the results have come from that. We know our game is very unforgiving. You can put together a great effort and still lose at times. So, we feel fortunate to be where we are right now, but it hasn't come without a lot of hard work."
Both games this weekend will be streamed by Big 1+2 Now on ESPN+.
After the Kansas road trip, the Bears return to host three-straight home games before closing out the regular season on the road at Oklahoma.
