Returning from a disappointing weekend in the Sunflower State, the Baylor Bears (7-3-4, 3-1-1) are looking to get back on the winning track after losing to Kansas and battling to a 0-0, double-overtime draw at Kansas State.
In a matchup of the teams sitting atop the Big 12 standings, Baylor hosts 25th-ranked Texas (8-3-3, 4-0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Betty Lou Mays Field to kick off a three-game home stretch.
Against the Jayhawks, the Bears had a nine-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 loss despite the efforts of dominating players Gabby Mueller and Taylor Moon and a late goal from Kayley Ables. Three days later, Baylor out-shot K-State, 21-8, but had to settle for the tie with Wildcat goalkeeper Anna Werremeyer recording a school-record 13 saves.
Baylor coach Paul Jobson said "the game is the greatest teacher, and they're smart kids."
"They understand, just through the match itself, there's about a 20-minute period (against Kansas) where we weren't us," Jobson said. "At this level, if you back down, you're going to get punished. And I think they learned from that on their own."
Jobson felt like the Bears played well in Sunday's game against K-State, the ball was simply not hitting the back of the net.
Ables, a senior defender who had her first collegiate goal after scoring a school-record 100 goals as a forward at Waco High, said the loss to Kansas "was kind of a wake-up call."
"We realized that we needed to get it together," Ables said. "And I think we did play well (against K-State), the score just didn't reflect it."
Sitting second in the Big 12, the Bears are looking forward to hosting the rival Longhorns as part of the Homecoming weekend.
"These are the kind of games that you want to play," Jobson said. "They all matter but, this late in the season, you're down to the final third of the season and you've got the No. 1 and No. 2 matched up against each other. And you're at home for that, it's Homecoming weekend."
Ables said Baylor is "trying to come in just as strong as we would for any other team."
"They're obviously a good team, so I think there's a mutual respect there," Ables said. "Just trying our best to play good against them."
The Longhorns defeated Iowa State, 2-1, last Friday, marking the 100th career win for coach Angela Kelly. Texas leads the all-time series with Baylor, 16-9-4, winning the last four matchups.
"Honestly, I think the most important thing that we've done is just continue to play Baylor soccer and not really focus too much on the other team," explained sophomore forward Olivia Mack, "It's important to understand the magnitude of this game, but also remember who we are and what got us here."
Homecoming is one of Baylor's greatest traditions, and Baylor soccer looks forward to welcoming the Longhorns to Waco along with a number of former players.
"We've had a great response from our alumni to be back," Jobson said. "(Friday), we'll have a tailgate event for them and recognize them at halftime. We wouldn't be where we are right ow as a team if it weren't for those young women...I know our current players are excited to see some of them again and meet some of them for the first time."
Friday's game will be streamed by Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
