For the first two sets in Friday's opening game of the Baylor Classic, the fifth-ranked Baylor volleyball team was maybe more efficient than it's been at any point this season, hitting .482 against the 17th-ranked and previously unbeaten Missouri Tigers.
Even though the Bears (8-0) were "just messing around too much in the third set," they still had enough to finish off their sixth 3-0 sweep of the year, rolling over the Tigers, 25-22, 25-18, 26-24, before a Ferrell Center crowd of 1,007.
Yossiana Pressley had 19 kills and hit .333, while Shelly Stafford had 11 kills and five blocks and hit a season-high .556.
"We do a lot of little things well," Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre said, "but we have a Yossi who's able to terminate in transition for us. . . . We got a little squirrely in the third set, more so in our transition. Our block was just enough. I thought our block could have been a lot better, but it was just enough to still impact the match."
Stafford had two kills and combined on three blocks in a 7-2 run that helped Baylor go up 19-14 in the third set. Missouri rallied to score the next five points and then fought off a pair of match points before Hannah Lockin closed it out with an ace.
"She missed the first one early, which she's really super reliable," McGuyre said of Lockin, who leads the team with nine aces. "So, to end it on an ace is a great way."
Lockin added 39 assists, five digs and three blocks and helped the Bears hit an efficient .333 with 41 kills and just 11 errors on 99 total swings. Missouri came in hitting a national-best .383, but the Tigers hit just .220 overall and had eight errors in a sloppy third set.
"They definitely make me look so good," Lockin said of her hitters. "They are incredible. All night tonight, I was like, 'Wow, they are so good!' It's so cool, because it's the whole team doing it. The passes are great and hopefully I'm delivering good balls, and even when I don't the hitters are phenomenal."
Ranked second nationally coming into the match with 5.91 kills per set, Pressley bumped that up to 5.96 with her 19-kill performance in Friday's match. She is hitting .336 for the season with 155 kills.
"No-brainer first-team All-American," McGuyre said, "with the number of sets she's getting, how many kills she's getting, and we're seeing teams that are leaving the blockers early to go get her. I think that's where our middles will keep getting better. Shelly hit over .500, Khara (McGee) over .400. Yossi is killing it, anyways, with two blockers. But if not, our middles will really turn it up."
In a back-and-forth first set, Pressley had four late kills to stake the Bears to the lead and then the Tigers' Tyanna Omazic had a service error on set point. Baylor jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and closed it out on a Stafford kill and a pair of attack errors by the Tigers (8-1).
"Tonight, she really stepped up," Lockin said of Stafford. "She's just such a leader on the court and so trustworthy. It was awesome to see her do well."
Missouri will try to bounce back with a matchup against 13th-ranked Hawaii (9-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday, with Baylor and Hawaii wrapping up the three-day, round-robin tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday. With losses by Nebraska, Temple and Missouri over the last three days, Baylor and Hawaii are among the seven remaining undefeated teams.
McGuyre said he likes the tournament schedule "because it means we're not coming out of a dogfight and having to turn around and play."
"It lets the girls watch and soak in the information rather than staying up late . . . and cram for a rest the next day," he said. "It, obviously, lets us as a staff not get up and cram, also. We can work ahead a little bit. It just gives us a chance to rest our legs."

BU came out fast to open the second set and used a Stafford service ace to force a Tiger timeout at 6-1. Mizzou fought back for the 13-13 tie, but a 4-0 run was capped off by a Milana solo block to keep the Bears in front. Stafford put down two kills, and Pressley's block helped the Bears jump out to the 2-0 lead, 25-18.
Baylor held a 19-14 lead after a block, but the Tigers would tie it up once again at 19-19 after a kill from Kylie Deberg. BU held a 24-22 advantage but had two match points wiped away after a Mizzou kill and a block.

"Missouri is really good. They do a lot of good things offensively, and they are pretty low error as a team, so you know you have to block balls and play some really good defense against them. I thought we were good but not great in the first set, and then the second half of the second set we played great."
