Woodson enters his fourth season with the Bears
WACO, Texas – Michael Woodson has been promoted to associate head coach of the Baylor men's tennis program, announced by Director of Tennis and Head Coach Brian Boland Friday morning.
"I want to thank Brian Boland, Kenny Boyd and Mack Rhoades for the opportunity they have provided me to continue representing Baylor University," Woodson said. "Their belief in me over my time here has been instrumental in helping me better myself as a coach, but more importantly, as a person."
Woodson is entering his fourth season on the Baylor staff after a coaching stint at Valparaiso, his alma mater.
"Our student-athletes make this opportunity so fulfilling on a daily basis that you start each day wanting to pour your heart into them like your own family," Woodson said. "To see them develop as players, leaders and men, together as a unit, makes this job as a coach so rewarding. I am humbled and grateful to receive this promotion and blessed to have the opportunity to represent Baylor University and our men's tennis program."
Last season, Woodson helped Baylor reach its 13th NCAA quarterfinal appearance and earn the program's ninth Big 12 postseason title. Individually, he mentored ITA Doubles All-Americans and All-Big 12 honorees Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah. He also saw Adrian Boitan earn Big 12 Freshman of the Year, ITA Regional Rookie of the Year and Big 12 Championship MOP honors.
Woodson also guided Matias Soto to his first career All-Big 12 singles honors.
During the 2017-18 season, Woodson helped guide Baylor to its 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a 21-10 overall record without a senior on the roster. Woodson mentored three All-Big 12 honorees in Sven Lah, Roy Smith and Will Little.
In his first season in Waco, Woodson contributed immediately as BU advanced to its 17th Sweet 16 appearance in 19 years. During that summer, he served as the USTA National Collegiate Team coach.
"Michael Woodson is one of the rising young stars in our coaching profession," Boland said. "Since my arrival, he has embraced everything I have asked of him. Michael is intelligent, passionate, gritty, and loves learning. I speak for everyone associated with Baylor tennis in saying that Michael is extremely deserving of this promotion. He believes in our vision for the program, has excellent values, and absolutely loves Baylor University."
Boland, Woodson and the Bears open the 2020 spring season with a doubleheader against Boise State and UT Arlington on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The matches are slated for 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. starts, respectively.
