WACO, Texas – Baylor assistant coach Jon Capron has been promoted to associate head coach of Baylor's cross country program, head track & field coach Todd Harbour announced Thursday.
"Jon has been a tremendous assistant over the years while coaching our men and helping me with the women's team in the fall," Harbour said. "He has more than earned this opportunity, and I have full confidence that he will carry on the tradition that was handed off to me 18 years ago. This is a great time for both of our programs as we move forward."
Entering his 14th season as a Baylor coach, Capron (pronounced CAPE-run) will now add the women's cross country team responsibilities after previously handling the men's team since 2005.
"It has been a privilege to be a part of this staff since 2005 when I was asked to help Coach Harbour with the cross country teams and distance events," Capron said. "I am honored to be chosen to lead these teams and am reassured that I have each of my fellow coaches as resources to continue to move us forward. The Baylor cross country teams have a long history of great results, not only on the course, but also in our ability to develop championship people that are succeeding on so many levels. I love recruiting to this team and this school because I know what role it played and continues to play in my life and the opportunities that are available to those that come. I look forward to continuing to create even more experiences for these athletes at the highest levels."
Harbour will continue to train the women's distance and middle distance squads while Capron will remain working with the intermediate hurdlers and relay teams during track & field season.
During the 2017 season, Capron guided the men's team to its highest conference finish since 2003 as they finished fifth at the Big 12 Championship in Austin.
Capron inherits a cross country program that has produced 31 All-Big 12 performances from a combined 16 runners since 1997.
Alongside Harbour, Capron has played an integral role in the success of Baylor's women's cross country teams. The women's teams made seven straight NCAA Championship appearances from 2003-09.
The Bears have hosted the NCAA South Central Regional for eight of the last 14 seasons with the women finishing second in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009 and third in 2004, while the men finished seventh in 2003, 2004 and 2006 and fourth in 2010.
Capron has helped guide the women's track & field program to seven top-20 finishes at nationals, while the men have been top-20 12 times. Capron was also integral in the program's first Big 12 women's track & field indoor title in 2017.
Capron was a four-year letterwinner for the Bears (2000-03) where he earned All-Big 12 accolades two straight years (2001 & 2002) in the 1,000 meters and was a member of record-setting 4x1,500 and 4x800 relay teams.
Baylor cross country opens its 2018 season by hosting the Bear Twilight Invitational on Friday, Aug. 31 at the HOT Soccer Complex for the 16th-consecutive year.
