Senior midfielder first in program history to repeat top academic honors
WACO, Texas - Baylor soccer senior midfielder Julie James was named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team, announced Tuesday by the national coaching organization.
After earning a second team selection in 2017, James becomes the only student-athlete to earn multiple Scholar All-America honors and just the third selection in the program's history (Dana Larsen, 2012).
James is the only Big 12 student-athlete to repeat selections in both 2017 and 2018, standing as one of only five in the country to earn the honors each of the last two seasons.
The Fairview, Texas, native already earned a United Soccer Coaches All-America selection for her play on the field, helping lead the Bears back into the NCAA Elite 8 and earning a Big 12 regular season title. She holds a 3.73 GPA in the Baylor Business Fellows, Entrepreneurship and Economics program.
To be considered for the award, candidates must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or better throughout their career, have started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contribute to their team, be nominated by the head coach of current College Services member institutions, and be a junior or above in academic standing; and, if a transfer student, in the second year at the school.
