Bears pace the Big 12 with most selections for academic honor
WACO, Texas - Baylor soccer saw three student-athletes named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Region teams, announced Monday by the national coaching organization.
Senior midfielder Julie James repeated her 2017 first team honors, with senior defender Sarah King and junior forward Camryn Wendlandt both earning second team honors.
Baylor received the most selections to the Scholar All-Region teams among the Big 12 Conference schools, with West Virginia (two) and Texas (one) also earning selections.
James advanced out of the Scholar All-Region voting as a junior in 2017, becoming the second student-athlete to earn the Scholar All-America designation. With a first team selection in 2018, she could become the only student-athlete in program history to earn multiple Scholar All-America honors, with the nationwide awards announced on Tuesday.
The Fairview, Texas, native has already earned a United Soccer Coaches All-America selection for her play on the field, helping lead the Bears back into the NCAA Elite 8 and clinching a Big 12 regular season title. She maintained a 3.73 GPA in the Baylor Business Fellows, Entrepreneurship and Economics program.
King caps off her senior campaign as one of the Big 12's top defenders, finishing her career second only to James in career minutes played in program history. The Coppell, Texas, native carries a 3.79 GPA, studying political science.
Camryn Wendlandt had a breakout performance in her junior season, tying with James for the team-high goal scoring mark at 10 each. The Couer d'Alene, Idaho, native posted a 3.92 GPA in Baylor's International Business and Business French program.
