Flat and horsemanship give Bears early lead in top-five contest
THE RUNDOWN
FRESNO, Calif. – No. 4 Baylor equestrian (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) holds a 5-3 lead at the halfway point of its top-five contest against No. 5 South Carolina Friday at the Student Horse Center in Fresno, Calif.
The meet started out with equitation on the flat and horsemanship following USC's 10-7 victory over host and 10th-ranked Fresno State earlier in the morning.
In flat, the Bears and Gamecocks split with a 2-2 score. Caroline Weaver outscored Madison Sellman on Slim, winning 65-59. South Carolina scored the next few points after Grady Lyman topped Rachael Davis, 77-71, on Tom. Then, USC's Madison Brayman took a 71-60 win over Madison Day on Mac.
Closing out the event, Grace Thiel topped Trinity Hammerschmidt, 58-54, on a reride on Indie.
In horsemanship, BU took the first point after Clara Johnson defeated Sloan Vogt, 76-74.5, on Lola. The Bears' continued to roll when Katie Davis took a 73-72 win over Madison Thiel on Bruno. Moving to 6-0 this season, Abbi Demel took a 78-74.5 victory over Quinn Brandt on Zip.
South Carolina's lone point in the event came when Caroline Gute scored a 74.5-58 win over Kaylee Mellott on Luke.
