Director of Sports Journalism Jerry Hill gives his five takes for an extended and jam-packed Oct. 25-28 weekend that kicks off Thursday with No. 10 Baylor soccer hosting Oklahoma with a chance to win at least a share of the Big 12 title and football playing No. 12 West Virginia on the road in Morgantown:
1. BIG 12 TITLE ON THE LINE: It's been 20 years since Baylor soccer (14-4, 7-1) won a regular-season conference title. But, the Bears can take home their second regular-season title in program history by beating Oklahoma (7-8-2, 3-4-1) in Thursday's 7 p.m. game at Betty Lou Mays Field. This is Senior Night, plus there will be T-shirt and Clapper noisemaker giveaways. And if you can split your attention, there will also be a watch party for the Baylor-West Virginia football game.
2. ANOTHER SHOT AT A TOP-15 TEAM: Baylor football has already faced a pair of top-10 teams on the road, and now the Bears (4-3, 2-2) get a top-15 West Virginia team (5-1, 3-1) in Thursday's prime-time matchup iat 6 p.m. CDT n Morgantown (FS1). Interestingly, Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon started his collegiate playing career at West Virginia, while coach Matt Rhule's in-laws are West Virginia grads.
3. CHANCE AT REDEMPTION: After getting back on the winning track with Wednesday's five-set thriller over TCU on the road, Baylor volleyball (13-7, 5-4) returns home to host Kansas (13-6, 6-2) at noon Saturday at the Ferrell Center. The Bears have a chance to repay the Jayhawks after falling 3-1 in Lawrence earlier this month. Baylor was closer to full strength in the TCU match, with both Aniah Philo and Gia Milana both returning to the floor after missing last Saturday's three-set loss to Kansas State.
4. THIS IS WHEN IT MATTERS: As coach Jon Capron says, "these are the meets that everyone remembers," starting with Friday's Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa. The women's team was in over its heads in big meets at Notre Dame and Wisconsin, so the smaller field should play to their advantage. Junior Alison Andrews-Paul and the women kick it off with the 6,000-meter race at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 11. "We're still waiting to hit on all cylinders, really," Capron said.
5. BACK ON OUR HORSES: Coming off a road loss at Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener, the fourth-ranked Baylor equestrian team (3-1, 0-1) returns to the Willis Family Equestrian Center to host No. 5 TCU at 11 a.m. Saturday. In its only loss of the year, TCU won all four MOP awards in falling 9-8 to top-ranked Texas A&M on its home turf. In their only other home meet of the fall, the Bears outscored Delaware State, UT Martin and then-No. 8 Fresno State, 38-9, in last month's Willis Invitational.
