THE RUNDOWN PULLMAN, Wash. ÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬" Baylor volleyball (4-2) was unable to convert multiple set points in the second set, ultimately leading to a fifth-set loss to the College of Charleston Saturday morning at Bohler Gym, 19-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-6.
The Bears were led by Katie Staiger, who finished with 22 kills and 15 digs for her third double-double of the season. Aniah Philo also recorded a double-double with a 14 kill-11 dig performance against the Cougars (6-2).
Lockin added 55 assists and 11 digs for her second double-double, and Jana Brusek contributed 15 digs in the loss.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame, using three blocks to shut down the Charleston offense. Staiger had five kills to give BU the first set, 25-19.
Charleston fired back in set two, hitting .256 and limiting BU to a .196 clip. Staiger and Philo contributed offensively and set the Bears up for set point, 24-22. The Cougars would go on a 5-1 run to close the set and tie up the match, 27-25.
Baylor came out fast and jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set, and Shelly Fanning's five-kill performance in the frame led Baylor to a 25-21 win and 2-1 advantage.
The Bears fell behind and could never get into an offensive rhythm in the final two sets. The Cougars hit .500 in set four to force a decisive set, and BU's four kills in set five weren't enough to take the fifth, 15-6.
