THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas - On Thursday at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Spectrum,
Jenna Pfeiffer's school record in the heptathlon headlined the action for Baylor track and field at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Pfeiffer, a senior, finished 10th overall in the heptathlon competition with 5,500 points over the course of two days and seven events. That point tally bettered the previous school record of Jordan Willman by just a single point - 5,499 in 2003.
After racking up 3,256 points on the opening day of action, Pfeiffer was 14th in the field, but the senior produced 2,244 points over the final three events to move up and write her name in the record book.
She opened the second day with a long jump of 17-10.25 [5.44m], which was just .5 inches off her personal-best mark. That netted her 683 points to move up to 12th in the competition. In the javelin, Pfeiffer had the third-best throw of anyone in the field at 131-2 [39.98m] to earn 667 more points and push her to ninth. Pfeiffer established a personal-best 800-meter mark of 2:14.92 in the final event of the heptathlon to grab 894 points and the school record.
Meanwhile on the track, Kiana Hawn qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 57.93. That mark was fifth-fastest on the day as the BU junior will now run in the event finals at 7 p.m. Friday.
To close out BU's day in Austin, Megan SaxvanderWeyden finished second in the javelin with a top throw of 149-6 [45.58m]. The sophomore achieved that mark on her third throw of the competition and it ties for the third-longest in school history.
Baylor's two finishers in the decathlon, Luke Littlefield (7,080 pts.) and Hunter Powell (6,098 pts.) were 11th and 14th, respectively. Only two other BU athletes, Tommy Richards and Henry Vildosola, have tallied a higher point tally in the decathlon.
WHAT'S NEXT
On Friday, Baylor's athletes will continue action at the Texas Relays. Field events for the Bears start at 10 a.m. with the women's high jump, while running prelims begin at 9:35 a.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.
Meanwhile, seven distance runners will be in action in California.
Five women's runners, including Lindsey Bradley, Maggie Montoya, Gabby Satterlee, Peyton Thomas and Anna West, will compete at the Stanford Invitational. Satterlee will run the 1,500-meter event, while the other four competitors take part in the 5,000-meter race.
Two men's athletes, Sam Sahli and Jordan West, will take part in the San Francisco Distance Carnival. Both Bears will run in the 10,000 meters at 12:30 p.m. CT.
