March 12, 2017 HEAD COACH Scott Drew
On first thought when he saw New Mexico State pop up as first-round opponent:
"Anyone that pops up, you know is a good team and they're well-coached. Coach Ware has done a tremendous job there. They've only lost a few times all year. More importantly than that, from our games with them in the past, we know they're very talented and well-coached. And it's a team that traditionally has done very well. That's why we've played them. RPI-wise, we always know they're going to be in the tournament and win a lot of games. So, we are familiar with them."
On being in Tulsa:
"Really excited about Tulsa. Whoever you play, you're not going to be as excited about. But the location, especially after going to Providence last year and having to play up there and Jacksonville before that, being closer so our fans can hopefully drive there, that's huge. I'm very excited about that."
On dropping down to a 3 seed:
"Since the last two years we went further away and lost, to me it was all about location. And being in Tulsa was the No. 1 thing we wanted. If Dallas had a site, or Austin or somewhere else, we would have loved to have even been closer. But we got the closest site, and that's great for our fans. And if you're thinking about coming, Baylor Nation, we need you there. So please come up there."
On potential second round matchup with SMU:
"Anyone you play in the tournament is going to be tough. SMU, obviously, just won a championship, they're on a roll. More importantly, we know we're in it. We know we're in Tulsa. We know whoever we play is going to be a real tough matchup and a real tough game. It's win or go home, so you've got to play well."
On mindset the past few days:
"After the game, I'll let you know if it was good getting the added rest and hopefully some motivation. I know this is the time of the year where a lot of times games come down to who's making free throws, who can convert on open looks. What we're going to do is we're going to try to do our best to make sure that we control everything we can control."
On Vandy getting in
"Yeah, really excited. As long as we didn't play, we were good with everything. But, I know they did a remarkable job. I think they were 13-14, and to finish the way they did, I'm really proud of Bryce."
On being in a separate region from Vandy:
"You know what, we would have loved them in the same region, just not play against them. But at the end of the day, both of us being in, that's all you can ask for. Now, it's March Madness. The biggest thing I can say is the numbers don't matter up there. What matters is who plays well on the day of that game. For us, we were just done in a one-and-done environment and didn't go well for us. So, hopefully we're hungry, hopefully we're excited, hopefully we're rested and ready to go. And most of all, hopefully we can get a lot of fans to Tulsa and give you a lot to cheer for."
On Manu's status:
"Aggravated it at the end of the game. And that's why when he started to limp, we didn't want to take any added risks. We wanted to make sure he was ready for this week."
On SMU-Duke talk being used as motivation:
"Oh, of course. No one likes to be disrespected. I know with us, the way we lost to K-State, I'm sure people will think we're a team that's vulnerable. And you know what, everybody's vulnerable. Everybody's 40 minutes from going home. You've got great coaches, great players, it's the best time of the year. And we're excited to be a part of it and hopefully do what we need to do to be able to survive and advance."
On message to the team:
"I like the run part. That's good positivity. I think this time of the year, you're real positive with the guys, accent their strengths, what got us here, why we're one of the best teams in college basketball. There's 351 schools, only 68 get to play in this. So, we want to do what we've done all year, not change who we are or what's made us and allowed us to be successful."
On Ish being the first player in program history to make the NCAA Tournament four years in a row:
"A huge accomplishment. When you look at the history of Baylor basketball, going to the tournament is not something we can take for granted. Ish being the first player to be in four straight is a great testament to what he's done and how he's sacrificed for our program and has been a great leader this year."
On New Mexico State:
"You're going to see a lot of athleticism, a lot of talented players. Everyone's well-coached. Otherwise, they wouldn't be in the tournament. You're going to see a lot of players that athletically do a lot of things that are very exciting. Hopefully, they see it in warm-ups and not in the game, because we don't need any SportsCenter dunks against us. But, this is a really talented team and Coach Ware has done a tremendous job this year."
Ishmail Wainright
"This is my last ride so I want to go out with a bang. I told the guys I'm going to give my all starting today. We had practice before this and that got us ready and now we're ready to take care of business. The last time we had to wait until the last stage but they announced this right off the bat. That's a good thing."
On 3rd seed:
"It doesn't matter. It's just being in the NCAA tournament. The younger guys don't know anything about it. Me, Mot and Al have to let them know what this means. Not too many teams can say they've been to the tournament. We've got to take it and run with it and take care of business and break down film. I know coaches are going to show us film on New Mexico State because we played against them last year. We're extremely motivated. We were flipping tires today. All Coach Charlie was yelling at us was we're not going to get bounced in the first round. I'm pretty sure we're motivated. Not just the players, the coaches, the fans, y'all."
On Tulsa:
"I know Tyson is going to bring his whole family down there. My family is in Tulsa also. Baylor Nation is going to follow us up there so it will be good. I'm extremely excited to make it four years in a row. Not too people can say that especially at Baylor. We want to go as far as possible. We've got to focus, lock in. Don't take anyone for granted. It doesn't matter who we play we've got to play like it's our last game. We've got to play like our backs are against the wall. We've got to play like we did at the beginning of the season."
On losing vs. K-State:
"Nobody likes to lose. Our goal was to win the championship. We didn't get the regular season or tournament championship, so now our only goal is beat New Mexico State. Take it one goal at a time."
Johnathan Motley
"It's new and exciting every time. It's such a great honor to make the tournament with all these great teams and have a chance to win the national championship."
On going to Tulsa:
"It was definitely what we were hoping for. We got what we wanted. I'm glad we're close to home and it will be good for us. Usually the lower your seed is the higher chance you have of advancing."
On New Mexico State last year:
"They had an NBA guy who got drafted. They had some talent come out there and a pretty good coach. We just want to do this for Ish. It's his last run. I didn't like the way we sent out TP and Rico. Those guys are real close to me and real good friends. Ish is our captain and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we send him out in a good way. The Big 12 is crazy. It's real physical and everyone knows what you're going to do. So it's good to get some diversity in who you're playing. Teams don't really know you that well. We played New Mexico State the last couple of years. It's crazy. Anything can happen in the tournament. The first couple rounds there are always upsets. The first game is usually your hardest game. If we make it out of that I think we'll be fine."
