Baylor Bear Foundation Last year, if All-American Katie Staiger had a negative hitting percentage, Baylor volleyball didn't win. That simple.
"This year, we're able to come at teams in so many different ways and options," coach Ryan McGuyre said.
Shelly Fanning (14) and Yossiana Pressley (10) posted double-digit kills, and freshman setter Hannah Lockin had a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs, as the Bears (14-4, 4-1) swept 20th-ranked Iowa State, 25-19, 25-20, 25-14, Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
"Such great maturity from us tonight, great composure," McGuyre said. "I just felt like we were in control the whole night. What a beautiful match from Hannah Lockin, for us to side-out 72 percent. She's one of the best setters in the country right now. As a freshman, to have us hitting offensively what we're doing against a very, very good Iowa State team . . . I thought our two freshmen (Lockin and Pressley) did a phenomenal job."
It was Baylor's first road sweep of the Cyclones (11-3, 2-2) in 16 years and the first win over a ranked opponent on the road since Nov. 12, 2011, at No. 25 Oklahoma. The Bears also won back-to-back matches at Iowa State for the first time since the 2004-05 seasons, beating the Cyclones, 3-2, last year.
"Tonight, we played for sure like a top-20, top-15 team," McGuyre said. "We were dialed-in, we played good, clean volleyball. I think our girls tonight recognized - like I said, we didn't have Katie dialed-in - but when we put it all together, we can be pretty dynamic."
Staiger hit minus-.042 with five kills and six attack errors on 24 total swings, but added 10 digs, two block assists and a service ace. Camryn Freiberg and Aniah Philo combined for 14 kills and only one error on 32 swings, hitting a combined .406, while Fanning hit .500 with 14 kills and two errors on 24 attempts.
Leading from start to finish in the first set, the Bears were up 15-10 at the media timeout and closed it out on kills by Freiberg and Staiger.
Iowa State kept it closer in the second set, with nine ties and three lead changes, before Baylor took control with four kills by Fanning in a 5-0 run. The Bears took a 2-0 sets lead on a service error by Monique Harris.
Not letting up, Baylor jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set three to force an Iowa State timeout, and closed out the match with a Philo service ace.
"All year, we've talked about there being three stages," McGuyre said. "Stage 1 is effort, we've got to put the effort in first. That's never been an issue with this team. (Stage) 2 is the skill, the technical side of it, and we've been a lot more focused on that technical part. Tonight, we finally entered Stage 3, where there's just a dynamic style of play that allows you to flow into adjustments. We were ready for a battle. And if it came, I thought we were prepared."
The Bears hit .271 while holding Iowa State to a .113 attack percentage, out-digging the Cyclones, 55-45. Philo (12), Lockin (11) and Staiger (10) had double-digit digs, with libero Jana Brusek adding nine digs and Pressley seven.
"I thought my staff did a phenomenal job helping us be prepared for this match, so we weren't surprised on anything," McGuyre said. "I felt like we won almost all the long rallied, and we were trying to first-ball side-out on everything else."
Baylor returns home to host West Virginia (12-5, 1-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
