IRVING, Texas ÃÆ'Æ'à € ' ¢ÃƒÆ'Æ' ¢' ¬" Baylor cross country's Kasey Kinzel and Seth Brown were named the Big 12 Cross Country Runners of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
This is the fifth time that the Bears have swept the weekly conference honors but first since Sept. 11, 2012 when John Ryan Hardy and Rachel Johnson were recognized in the same week. This is the first career honor for both Kinzel and Brown.
Kinzel served as the women's lead runner at the Aggieland Open last Friday, finishing in a top-10 spot for the first time in her career. Running a 19:18.3 pace on the 5,000-meter course, the senior shaved off more than two minutes from her time at the Aggieland Open last season (21:42.21). Her ninth-place finish helped the Baylor women finish third at the meet.
Brown posted a top-20 finish at the Aggieland Open, finishing with a team-leading time of 16:13.8 on the 5,000m course. The top-20 finish was the first since his freshman season. The junior has consistently posted top-25 finishes in all three races he has competed in this season.
In the 21-year history of the Big 12, BU runners have now been honored 33 times (eight men, 25 women). Baylor has collected three weekly awards this season after Lindsey Bradley's honor on Oct. 3. It is also the first time since 2014 that multiple Baylor female runners have been honored in the same season.
Baylor cross country is back in action this weekend as the women race Friday at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis. while the men head to Pre-Nationals on Saturday at Louisville, Ky. Both races will be streamed on FloTrack.
