Jan. 24, 2017 IRVING, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor track and field freshman Aaliyah Miller was honored as the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The McKinney, Texas, product stared for BU over the weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky.
She produced a world-leading 800-meter time of 2:03.43 to win the event title. Miller's mark, which is second-fastest in school history behind Olicia Williams' 2015 time of 2:03.21, reached far beyond the BU record book. According to research by Erik Boal of DyeStat, Miller's time is believed to be a college freshman indoor record and top 30 all-time among NCAA Division I performers.
Miller's time is also No. 4 all-time on the American Junior indoor performer list behind only Mary Decker (2:01.8), Ajee' Wilson (2:02.64) and Mary Cain (2:02.75).
Currently, Miller's mark leads all Big 12 performers by over four seconds in the event and is the top time in the NCAA by .61 seconds.
The day before at the meet, Miller ran the 800-meter leg (2:05.0) for BU's title winning distance medley relay. The crew set the NCAA's top time for the current indoor season with a mark of 11:12.39 to be 4.3 seconds faster than in anyone else in the country and over 14 seconds better than anyone in the Big 12. Alison Andrews-Paul led-off for the Bears and was followed by Kiana Hawn, Miller and Maggie Montoya with the final three legs having to run alone in front. The quartet's time is also 10th-best in BU history.
The freshman's recognition marks just the seventh week in which a Baylor female has won the indoor Athlete of the Week honor, joining Lauren Hagans, Tiffany Townsend, Skylar White, Tiffani McReynolds, a distance medley relay quartet (Mariah Kelly, Kiana Hawn, Olicia Williams, Maggie Montoya) and Taylor Bennett. Bennett was the last BU indoor selection to be honored by the conference as she won the award on Feb. 24, 2016.
Miller is the second Baylor female freshman to ever win the conference's indoor weekly award as an individual, joining Bennett. All told, she is the just the seventh female freshman to win the accolade.
The Bears now have this weekend off, before heading back to College Station, Texas, for the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 3-4.
