WACO, Texas -- For the ninth time in the last 10 series meetings, the Baylor men's tennis team triumphed over Texas with a 4-2 victory Tuesday night at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Despite the 45th-ranked Bears (12-9, 1-1 ) being ranked 28 spots lower than the No. 17 Longhorns (15-7, 0-1), Baylor recorded its sixth-straight win over Texas and has not lost to UT since 2011.
The Bears opened the action by securing the doubles point for the 14th time this season in 20 matches. However, Texas actually recorded the first match victory as Felipe Rios and Jimmy Bendeck dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 86 George Goldhoff and Julian Zlobinsky at the No. 2 spot.
At that point the two other doubles matches were tied 4-4. Both BU pairings went on to win the next two games in each match to take the point.
First, Tommy Podvinski and Max Tchoutakian used a double fault on match point to break 68th-ranked Adrian Ortiz and Michael Riechmann for the 6-4 upset. The pair of Bears were down 3-1 to open the match and roared back to win five of the next six games to take the contest.
To close out the doubles point, Julian Lenz held to give him and partner Tyler Stayer a 6-4 triumph over Harrison Scott and John Mee at the No. 3 spot.
Rios, a senior, was honored along with Lenz prior to singles play and then turned in a dominating performance at the No. 3 spot with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Ortiz to put the Bears up 2-0.
The Longhorns stormed back into the match with a pair of straight-set wins on courts five and six. After Tommy Podvinski and Tyler Stayer had pushed their opponents to first-set tiebreakers, the young Bears were unable to keep up the pace in the second sets. Podvinski fell 7-6(1), 6-3 to Michael Riechmann at the No. 5 spot, while Stayer lost 7-6(4), 6-1 at the No. 6 position.
Baylor had won four of six first sets to open singles play, but those early advantages disappeared with Texas winning second sets on all three remaining courts.
After leading 6-4, 4-6, 4-1 at the top of the lineup, the 14th-ranked Lenz had to hold off No. 87 Goldhoff, who tied the third set 4-4, before the BU senior closed him out with a hold and then a break. Lenz's 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory gave BU a 3-2 advantage.
Moments later, the 86th-ranked Tchoutakian, who had suffered a three-set tiebreak loss in a 4-3 setback to No. 12 Texas Tech Saturday, bounced back to clinch the match for the Bears with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 triumph over Harrison Scott at the No. 2 spot.

TOP QUOTE #1
"They're just playing so hard and give it all their effort. We've just got to execute a little bit better, but the guys were really giving all they had. You feel like if you keep doing that, then some of these close matches will go your way. This one went our way." --head coach Matt Knoll on the win
TOP QUOTE #2
"We need every point we can get, and we got that [doubles point]. It was an amazing comeback for Max and Tommy who got down right off the back and played a poor first game. For them to come back and beat another ranked team is a great effort from them. I'm really proud of those guys." --Knoll on winning a crucial doubles point
TOP QUOTE #3
"I can't remember a time we haven't won on Senior Night, and we certainly didn't want to put Julian and Felipe, two of your greatest players we've had here, down the road without getting a win. This is special. To beat Texas, our biggest rival, on Senior Night is a big deal for those guys." --Knoll on the Senior Night victory
