THE RUNDOWN
DALLAS ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor women's golf finished in fifth place at the Dallas Athletic Club Invitational after shooting 10-over-par 298 in Sunday's final round. The Bears entered the day in sixth place and climbed one spot with a 54-hole score of 40-over-par 904.
Freshman Maria Vesga finished tied for sixth place individually, earning her career-first top-25 finish. Vesga carded a 1-over 73 final round to total 3-over 219 for the tournament. Laura Lonardi and Giovanna Maymon tied for 24th place at 10-over-par 226 after shooing third-round scores of 4-over 76 and 2-over 74, respectively. Maggie Beth Byers climbed two spots to tie for 56th place after shooting 3-over 75 on the day, giving her a final score of 17-over 233. Natalia Perez (+32, 248) tied for 78th place following a third-round score of 11-over 83.
Oklahoma State (+4) won the tournament, followed by UNLV (+24), Washington (+31), tournament-host SMU (+39) and Baylor (+40) rounding out the top five. Baylor finished in front of TCU (+41), Kansas (+44), Kansas State (+44), Texas Tech (+45), Iowa State (+45), UTSA (+45), Tulane (+48), New Mexico State (+50), Central Arkansas (+53), Florida International (+53) and North Texas (+109).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor tied for fourth in par-5 scoring at 1-over 5.02 and tied for sixth in par-4 scoring at 41-over 4.27.
- The Bears recorded 164 pars through 54 holes to tie for fourth in the field.
- Baylor made 29 birdies to tie for seventh-most in the 16-team field.
- Maria Vesga placed second in par-4 scoring at 3-under 3.90.
- Laura Lonardi tied for fifth in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.75.
- Vesga made 10 birdies to tie for ninth-most in the 84-player field.
- Vesga made 15 pars, two birdies and one triple-bogey in her final round.
- Giovana Maymon tied for 13th in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.92.
STAT OF THE DAY
5th ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor's fifth-place finish tied its best of the season. The Bears have recorded back-to-back fifth place finishes after placing 10th or higher in their five previous stroke play events during the 2015-16 season.
