WACO, Texas -- The 38th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team opens Big 12 conference play with a match against No. 12 Texas Tech Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor starts its quest for a fourth-straight conference regular season title with an 11-8 record and a 10-3 mark in home matches. In 19 seasons of Big 12 action, BU is 108-19 with 13 regular season titles, including 12 in the last 14 years. Baylor is 15-4 all-time in Big 12 openers.
Last season, Baylor clinched a share of the regular season title with a 4-1 win over the Red Raiders in Lubbock. Seniors Julian Lenz and Felipe Rios recorded singles and doubles wins for the Bears.
Baylor looks to avenge its 4-3 loss to Texas Tech earlier this season at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In the loss, the Bears clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 and 3 spots and added singles wins from Rios and junior Max Tchoutakian.
Baylor leads the all-time series 28-27, but the Bears hold a 22-2 lead under head coach Matt Knoll. The Bears look to win 22 of its last 24 matches against the Red Raiders on Saturday.
Texas Tech is 21-3 on the season, most recently dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 40 Rice last Saturday in Houston. TTU has also recorded losses to then-No. 7 North Carolina and No. 5 Wake Forest in February.
The Red Raiders are tied for third place in the Big 12 preseason poll, released on Tuesday.
Texas Tech is led by No. 14 Felipe Soares in singles play, followed by No. 108 Alex Sendegeya and No. 116 Hugo Dojas. Live scoring, live video feed and an in-match blog will be available on BaylorBears.com.
Lenz leads the Bears with a No. 20 ITA singles ranking, boasting a 12-3 singles record heading into the weekend. BU has another ranked singles player in Tchoutakian, coming in at No. 66. Lenz teams up with redshirt freshman Will Little to be the 24th-ranked doubles duo in the latest ITA rankings.
Furthermore, No. 20 Lenz looks to move up in the Baylor career singles record book, currently at No. 7 with 105 singles wins. Former teammate Mate Zsiga currently stands at No. 6 with 106 wins.
