WACO, Texas - The Baylor track and field team will continue its outdoor slate by traveling to the inaugural Ricardo Romo Invitational hosted by UTSA at the Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio, Texas, Thursday through Saturday.
BU is slated to have 20 women's athletes and 25 men's athletes in action. The meet also features host UTSA, along with Akron, Texas A&M, TCU and Texas State.
The invitational meet will open for BU on Thursday afternoon with a pair of athletes, Chase Hood and Hunter Powell, competing in the decathlon competition. Friday's action will include the conclusion of the decathlon beginning at 11 a.m. and Desmine Hilliard taking part in the men's shot put event at 2 p.m., followed by Cion Hicks in the women's shot put competition.
On Saturday, field events start at 10 a.m. and running events begin at 2 p.m.
The Bears opened the outdoor season last weekend at the TCU Invitational where they had three athletes take home event titles, including Justise Dayries (200m), Richard Hansen (javelin) and Annie Rhodes (pole vault).
Earlier Thursday, the women's team was ranked No. 19 in the first USTFCCCA rankings of the outdoor season, while the men were 43rd.
The women have seven marks by six different athletes that currently rank in the top 20 after the opening week of the outdoor season across the NCAA. Triple jumper Rachel Toliver leads that group with the country's second-best mark at 42-2.75 [12.87m]. Pole vaulter Annie Rhodes comes in at No. 3 nationally with a best clearance of 13-11.25 [4.25m]. Other athletes in the top 20 include Justise Dayries, who is ranked in both the 100 (19th) and 200-meter (8th) dashes with time of 11.64 and 23.45, respectively. Kiana Hawn opened with a time of 59.32 in the 400-meter hurdles, which is ninth-best nationally. Meanwhile, Kiana Horton joins Dayries on the 200-meter list at No. 15 with a time of 23.60. Finally, Cion Hicks' third-place shot put throw of 50-4.5 [15.35m] ranks her 20th in the land.
On the men's side, two athletes, Richard Gary and Rhys Phillips have top-20 marks in the NCAA, after one week of competition. Gary is 17th in the 400 meters with a time of 47.69, while Phillips is 13th in the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of 14.10.
After competing at the Ricardo Romo Invitational, Baylor will take part in the Texas Relays starting March 30 in Austin.
