THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - The 34th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team rolled over No. 17 Memphis, 4-0, Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor (7-4) snapped a two-match home losing streak with the victory and are now 6-0 all-time against the Tigers (7-3).
The Bears earned a critical doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Senior Julian Lenz and freshman Jimmy Bendeck carded a 6-4 triumph over Louis Asser and Kai Lemke at the top of the lineup to give BU an early advantage.
After gaining early leads on both remaining courts, the Bears went to two doubles tiebreakers to decide the point. First, junior Max Tchoutakian and freshman Tommy Podvinski fell 7-6(4) to Andrew Watson and Shakeel Manji at the No. 3 spot.
Then, after giving up a 4-1 tiebreaker lead, senior Felipe Rios and redshirt freshman Will Little clinched the point with a tight 7-6(6) victory at the No. 2 spot.
Baylor then rolled off its next three points after taking five of six opening sets in singles play. No. 122 Rios recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lemke on court three. No. 26 Lenz followed shortly after with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 57 Ryan Peniston at the top of the lineup.
Bendeck clinched the win for the second-straight match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Felix Rauch on court five.
NOTABLES
- Baylor earned its third sweep of the season, last taking a 7-0 shutout over Incarnate Word on Jan. 30. The Bears had 14 shutouts in the 2015 season.
- Baylor is now 5-1 after winning the doubles point.
- Senior Felipe Rios has now win three straight singles matches for the Bears, dating back to the Bears' match vs. Texas Tech on Feb. 13.
