Feb. 24, 2016 IRVING, Texas - Baylor track and field freshman Taylor Bennett was recognized as the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
The product of Spring, Texas, shined at Friday's Arkansas Qualifier meet at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. She won the 200-meter dash event in a personal-best time of 23.24. That time moved Bennett up to No. 11 on the NCAA indoor performance list for the current season and registered as the ninth-fastest time in school history. It also is the second-fastest time in the Big 12 this year.
Bennett also ran a 7.54 time in the 60-meter dash prelims in Arkansas, which qualified her for the finals of the event with the fourth-fastest time. To get ready for the 200-meter race, Bennett did not run in the final of the 60-meter dash.
The freshman's recognition marks just the sixth week in which a Baylor female has won the indoor Athlete of the Week honor, joining Lauren Hagans, Tiffany Townsend, Skylar White, Tiffani McReynolds and distance medley relay quartet of Mariah Kelly, Kiana Hawn, Olicia Williams and Maggie Montoya. That DMR crew was the last BU selection to be honored by the conference as it won the award on Feb. 25, 2015.
Bennett is the first Baylor female freshman to ever win the conference's indoor weekly award as an individual. All told, she is the just the sixth female freshman to win the accolade and the first since Texas' Bianca Knight accomplished the feat on Feb. 19, 2008.
Bennett is the second Baylor athlete to be honored by the conference this season as 400-meter runner George Caddick was recognized in late January as the male athlete of the week.
Baylor will now travel to the Big 12 Indoor Championship, Friday and Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
