Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement...
"You really have to credit Texas Tech for shooting 58 percent. Defensively, I thought they made some tough shots. I thought we could do some better things defensively. At the end of the day, they earned the win and they did a good job there defensively. They held us to 44 percent. The big thing is they caused 16 turnovers. We gave up 24 points on our turnovers. Texas Tech is a low possession team. They like to work it for 30 seconds. If you turn it over early, what happens is you are playing a minute of defense and five seconds of offense, and they compound that by making shots. That's why we wanted to get out to a lead, so they would have to play a little bit faster. We weren't able to do that and they were very efficient and very effective. I though Coach [Tubby] Smith did a great job tonight."
On what Baylor has to do to get betterà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It's really easy when we defend, we win, and when we don't, we lose. When we turn it over, we lose, and when we don't, we win. We have to do those two things."
On how the game got out of handà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"They made tough shots and we compounded it by turning it over and allowing them to have advantages on the offensive end, or frustrating us more when we weren't able to score. It led into them having more confidence. It's easier to shoot when you are up 15 or 20. "
On Baylor's performance in the paintà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"That's what's great about film ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" you go back and see where you could have driven it, maybe could have gone up stronger. I thought that if you add up the 50-50 balls, we won it. Usually that doesn't add up if you win the 50-50 balls ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" if you win the rebounding, that means you are doing something right. Points in the paint, 36 to 20, so my question is, if you are in the paint that much, you are rebounding that much, and you are winning 50-50 balls, I don't think you can say you aren't playing hard."
Senior Taurean Prince
On Baylor's recent struggles at homeà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It's just guys not having the same intensity that they should, but that goes on your seniors not being able to get your guys' minds right before games. I'll take the blame for that, and I have to do a better job of doing that and making sure that the team is ready to play. Not just the starters, but the bench too."
On if Texas Tech was playing more intensely à ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"At certain times of the game. I wouldn't say we didn't want it because were definitely playing to win. Some things didn't go our way, and things went their way more. That's just the moral of the story. We have to get down and do our defense the way we know we can. "
Junior Ishmail Wainright
On Texas Tech making shots late in the shot clockà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"That is frustrating. You work so hard and then one little slip up, or hot-hand and they get a wide-open shot, or a last-second shot when we're backed off. Yeah, it's frustrating."
TEXAS TECH POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tubby Smith
Opening Statement...
"It was a good win for us. We've been in a desperation mode as of late. We're playing for a lot of things currently. Baylor has probably already clinched many postseason play opportunities ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" they've been there before. But I need to compliment my guys ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" they played extremely well. Scott Drew does a great job with his team and we were fortunate to get the win. Everything went well for us and went the right way tonight."
On winning back-to-back games against top 25 ranked teamsà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Whether we are winning against top 25 teams or not we are constantly seeking to improve. When you get good wins like we did against Iowa State and Oklahoma State, every win is a good win at this time of the year. We understand that and our players are beginning to understand that. They are maturing and are experienced enough to know what we need to do in order to win. Execution tonight, especially on the defensive end, was excellent and we shot the ball extremely well. We're getting better and guys are growing up."
On the remaining goals of the seasonsà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"As for a certain number of wins, I don't think we have one set. If you have a chance to make the postseason I think you have to give yourself a chance by playing well this time of the year and get wins. So, whether we make it to the big dance or wherever, our guys are now believing and understanding the difficulty of winning in this league. Now we have to get ready for Oklahoma, one of the top teams in the nation, despite its tough loss today. But there is excitement around our program, for our players, for our fans and for our administration. We came here to change the culture, so whatever good things happen for our program, it's because the guys are believing in each other and playing hard for one another."
Sophomore Keenan Evans
On scoring 21 points today after hitting the game-winning shot at Iowa Stateà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I felt like I fed off of that shot's momentum coming into today's game. I felt more aggressive overall and I wanted to facilitate for my teammates. I wanted to find them and get them open. I hope that this game's momentum will carry into the next one."
On second half 10-0 runà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I felt that the run we went on was a turning point in the game. Overall, we were trying to be aggressive, especially when they were throwing it into the post. I felt that's where I got a lot of my steals from. We just felt like we owed them big time, especially after our home game earlier in the season and losing there."
Sophomore Zach Smith
On the change in defense during the second halfà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"The biggest change we made was giving them different defensive looks and surprising them with those changes."
