Men's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -
The fifth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team recorded two victories in the team's Saturday doubleheader with wins over Incarnate Word (0-1) and Midwestern State (0-1) at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

The 7-0 win over the Cardinals (0-1) and 6-1 victory over the Mustangs pushed Baylor to 5-0 on the season for the second time in three years. Baylor recorded a 6-0 record to open the 2014 season. After three matches, Baylor only dropped two sets and one singles match in the three-match weekend. Baylor swept all nine doubles matches and took 11 of 12 singles matches.

MATCH ONE

Baylor (5-0) jumped on the Cardinals early in doubles play, with senior Julian Lenz and redshirt freshman Will Little taking a 6-0 win over Joey Vatanadilok and Sebastian Mortier at the No. 1 spot.

Senior Felipe Rios and freshman Jimmy Bendeck clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 victory over Fransisco Bendana and Josip Smoljan on court three.

Junior Max Tchoutakian and freshman Tommy Podvinski completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win on court two.

Lenz put the first singles point on the board as he rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Vatanadilok at the top of the lineup. Bendeck won his fourth straight match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court five for the 3-0 Baylor lead.

Rios clinched the match as he defeated Sebastian Mortier 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. The 59th-ranked Tchoutakian added to the score with a 6-0, 6-4 win on court two. Moments later, Little captured a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.

For the second-straight match, Podvinski captured the final singles point for the Bears, winning 7-6(4), 4-6, 1-0(2) in an ultimate tiebreaker over Ryan Hoverson.

MATCH TWO

Baylor rolled past the Mustangs in doubles play, starting with a 6-0 win from Rios and Bendeck at the No. 3 spot. Tchoutakian and Podvinski clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Radu Popa and Chris Norrie on court two. BU swept doubles with a 6-3 win from Lenz and Little on court one.

For the fourth time in five matches, Bendeck clinched the first singles point for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Benjamin Neander on court five. Rios added to the lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot quickly after.

The 59th-ranked Tchoutakian clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kyle Davidson at the top of the lineup. Lenz secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ramon Toyos at the No. 2 spot, followed by a 6-4, 6-1 victory for Little on court three.

Podvinski fell in the final singles match of the night, dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Chris Norrie on court six.

NOTABLES
- Baylor now owns a 4-0 all-time series record against Incarnate Word.
- Baylor defeated Midwestern State for the first time in 17 years. The last meeting came in 1999, and the Bears now own a 3-1 all-time series record over the Mustangs.
- Baylor earned its second sweep of the season against UIW, winning all doubles and singles matches. The Bears had 14 shutouts in the 2015 season.
- Redshirt freshman Will Little and true freshman Jimmy Bendeck are each 5-0 in singles matches, providing a point for the Bears in all five dual matches.
