THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Baylor men's tennis senior
Julian Lenz made the Sherwood Collegiate Cup quarterfinals by winning two singles matches at the Sherwood Country Club Friday.
In the 32-man singles draw, the No. 1 seeded Lenz took out Stanford's Roy Lederman, 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round and then bested 83rd-ranked Jake Devine of USC, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals.
BU's lone ranked singles participant, 59th-ranked Max Tchoutakian started his day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over UCLA's Michael Guzman. The Baylor senior then fell to Rob Bellamy of USC in the round of 16, 6-2, 7-6(3).
The other four singles players from Baylor in the draw all dropped their opening match.
Freshman Jimmy Bendeck lost 6-2, 6-4 to 41st-ranked Nick Crystal of USC, but then bounced back to beat Stanford's Brandon Sutter, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round of the consolation draw.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Will Little dropped a 6-4, 7-6(4) contest to No. 98 Logan Staggs of UCLA, before rebounding to down USC's Tanner Smith, 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation draw.
Both Tommy Podvinski and Felipe Rios lost both of their matches on the first day of action in California.
