Sept. 25, 2015 WACO, Texas â '¬" For the first time in 2015, Baylor's cross country teams will be in two separate locations for competition as the men's team heads to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., while the women travel to the Roy Griak Invitational in Saint Paul, Minn., Saturday.
The Baylor women, who are listed as the third-best team in the USTFCCCA's South Central Regional rankings, will take six athletes, Alex Davis, Ann-Marie Dunlap, Maggie Montoya, Charlotte Myers, Chelsea Orr and Peyton Thomas, to compete at the 30th-running of the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
"This is always a great meet," head coach Todd Harbour said. "It has always been a good meet for us. We have always gone up there and run well. We are coming into shape pretty good. I don't think we are quite where we were last year, but I think we will be there. Our main goal is just to try and come out of it healthy, race well, get some confidence and get ready for the big one in Wisconsin. We are just going to give it our best shot up there and see where we are at."
BU won the Bear Twilight Invitational and then sat its top runners at the Ken Garland and Gerald Richey Invitational.
Saint Paul's Les Bolstad Golf Course will serve as the site for the six-kilometer race that begins at 1:20 p.m. (CT).
The race will feature 25 other school, including three other NCAA Championship teams from a year ago. Four of the top seven teams from the 2014 Griak return to the 2015 field in Michigan State (first), Boise State (fourth), Baylor (fifth) and host Minnesota (seventh). In addition, top-20 finishers California (12th), Colorado State (16th), South Dakota (17th), Illinois (18th), Weber State (19th), and Utah State (20th) return to Les Bolstad Course for this year's race. Southern Utah (23rd), Marquette (25th), UMKC (30th), Central Michigan (31st), South Dakota State (33rd), and Drake (34th) round out the returning teams. The 10 newcomers to the 2015 race include Adams State, Arizona, Incarnate Word, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Utah Valley, and Wyoming.
Baylor last competed at the Roy Griak Invitational in 2014 with the women earning a fifth-place finish. Departed All-American Rachel Johnson finished as the runner-up in the race by covering the course in 20:41. Montoya is BU's top returner, after she took 20th last year in 21:50.
The Baylor men, who are ranked 11th in the USTFCCCA's South Central regional rankings will send 10 competitors, Eric Anderson, Seth Brown, Matt Galvin, JR Hardy, Henry Huff, Matt League, Chris McElroy, Matthew Parham, Kyle Scanlan and Jordan West, to compete in the 42nd-annual Stanford Invitational.
"We are excited to be able to get into some nice weather and a little bit of a step up in the competition," assistant head coach Jon Capron said. "This course is not an easy course, but it is a fast course. You should be capable of running some of your fastest times. I would like to see some of my guys PR, and I would like to see everyone step up to their ability level. My top guys need to be my top guys. Guys that aren't my top guys need to be right there with them or close behind them."
The 8,000-meter men's race will be held at the Stanford University Golf Course starting at 12:30 p.m. (CT). Other Division I schools competing at the event include Stanford (No. 1 West), Cal (No. 6 West), UCSB (No. 9 West), Cal Poly (No. 11 West), San Jose State (No. 14 West) and North Dakota State (No. 15 Midwest).
"Everybody just needs to step up a little bit to see how fast we can really run," Capron added. "I think we are better than we think we are right now, so we have to prove it and it should be exciting. Obviously, Stanford is really, really good. But there are a lot of teams between them and us that we should have our hands full with, so it should be fun."
This season, the Bears have finished second in both the Bear Twilight Invitational and the Gerald Richey Invitational, while taking third at the Ken Garland Invitational. Anderson led the Bears in the season's first two meets, while Scanlan was the top finisher for BU at the Gerald Richey meet.
Baylor last competed at the Stanford Invitational in 2012 with the men's team finishing 16th out of 29 teams. Junior Brad Miles led the Baylor contingent with a 76th-place finish in 25:48.
Next weekend, the men and women will join back together to run at the Chili Pepper Festival on Oct. 3 in Fayetteville, Ark.
