Hoping to come out of the day healthy, Baylor had an abbreviated 45-minute, 53-play scrimmage Thursday night at McLane Stadium to close out fall camp.

"The main thing we really wanted to do was get out of this thing healthy," head coach Art Briles said. "At the end of the day, that's what it's all about. We've got good people, and we've just got to get them to the game next Friday. . . . Knock on wood, so far it's been good. Hopefully we can continue that trend all season. Just get us to the game next week and let's play."

In limited action, starting quarterback Seth Russell was 4-of-7 for 25 yards and freshman backup Jarrett Stidham completed 6-of-9 for 39 yards.

"Every day, you've got to get better," Russell said. "I feel like my footwork, my timing with the receivers, the offensive line, the tempo, I feel like everything has progressed. And that's something we have to do every day."

Redshirt sophomore Chris Johnson, who will now split time at quarterback and receiver, was actually the leading receiver in the scrimmage with two catches for 35 yards from walk-on QB Zach Bennema.

"He's a big body that's got good hands and a real smart kid," Briles said of the 6-5, 235-pound Johnson. "So, we're excited about that. . . . This works out better for all concerned, because it allows Chris to help out at another position."

On the defensive side, junior linebacker Aiavion Edwards led the way with 10 stops, while freshman cornerback Henry Black had an interception and Beau Blackshear, Shawn Oakman, Jamal Palmer and Andrew Ezell each had a sack.

"We've come a long way," said Edwards, who is playing at both the middle and weakside spots. "We still have a lot to prove, but just looking at it as a whole from last year to this year, it's just a big difference. Hopefully, we can go out and show it on the field."

Leading the ground attack was freshman JaMycal Hasty with 28 yards on just three carries. Redshirt freshman Terence Williams tallied 26 yards on nine attempts, while Devin Chafin had 14 yards on five carries and scored on a three-yard run for the only touchdown.

Punters Tom Bennett and Drew Galitz averaged 42.5 and 40.0 yards, respectively, while Chris Callahan and Spencer Evans were 3-for-6 on field goals. Evans booted one of two from 55 yards.

After 22 days and three scrimmages, the Bears are ready for next Friday's season opener on the road at SMU, which will be nationally televised by ESPN.

"I feel like everybody is ready to go," Russell said. "You can only go against yourself so many times until you kind of get bored of it. We're ready to go against a different-colored jersey. I feel like the team has really come together. The defense looks awesome, like we knew they would. The offense looks great, the offensive line looks great and we're ready to go."
