June 27, 2015 EUGENE, Ore. -- Baylor track and field athlete Trayvon Bromell qualified for the United States' World Championship team with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash at the USATF Outdoor Championships Friday at Hayward Field.
Running out of lane four in the event final, Bromell went toe-to-toe with Tyson Gay, but the Nike professional pulled away in the last 10 meters as the BU sophomore finished second in 9.96 (0.0m/s) to Gay's 9.87.
With the top three finishers automatically qualifying for the IAAF World Championships, which run Aug. 22-30 in Beijing, China, Bromell will have a chance to represent the Stars and Stripes for a second-straight year. Last year as a freshman, he placed second in the event at the IAAF World Junior Championships.
Bromell advanced to the finals with the fastest qualifying time of 9.76 (3.7m/s) in the semifinals. That time was a personal-best and a school record. It also tied for No. 3 all-time in collegiate history in all-conditions. The time tied for the second-fastest in the world for 2015 in all conditions.
Baylor's only other competitor on the day, Tiffani McReynolds, was unable to run in the 100-meter hurdle prelims as she was still recovering from a leg injury that she suffered at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships.

• Former Baylor Olympian Jeremy Wariner finished seventh in his heat and 13th overall to miss out on qualifying for the 400-meter final with a time of 45.90 in the semifinals.
