EUGENE, Ore. -- Baylor track and field athletes Trayvon Bromell and Rachel Johnson each advanced to the next round of competition in the USATF Outdoor Championships Thursday at Hayward Field.

Bromell wowed the crowd with a wind-legal 9.84 (1.3m/s) in the opening round of the 100-meter dash to win his heat and be the second-fastest qualifier overall, behind Remontay McClain, who ran a wind-aided 9.82 (4.9m/s).

The sophomore sprinter's time pushed him into a tie with Jamaica's Asafa Powell as the second-fastest performer of the year and the third-fastest performance trailing Justin Gatlin's 9.74 and 9.75.

On the U.S. all-time lists, Bromell become the fourth-fastest U.S. performer in the 100 meters, only Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin and Maurice Greene have run faster times.

On the world all-time list, the St. Petersburg, Fla., native becomes the 10th-fastest performer in the event.

The time is also the fastest-ever run by a collegian, surpassing the 9.89 run by Florida State's Ngoni Makusha in 2011, LSU's Richard Thompson in 2008 and Clemson's Travis Padgett in 2008.

Bromell will now run in the 100-meter semifinals at 5:15 p.m. (7:15 p.m. CT) Friday, looking to place in the top four runners in the heat to advance to finals, which take place at 7:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. CT) Friday.

Johnson ran a controlled 9:48.55, the sixth-fastest time in school history, to place fourth in her heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The finish pushed the BU senior in to the finals of the event, which will be run Saturday at 1:55 p.m. (3:55 p.m. CT).

Baylor's other athlete in action, Raena Rhone, opened the day by placing sixth in her heat of the 400 meters in 53.38. The senior Bear's time was 22nd-fastest on the day out of 29 runners.

• Former Baylor All-American Marcus Boyd finished 30th in the 400 meters. Boyd ran a 46.77, which was the seventh-fastest time in the third heat.
