AMES, Iowa - On the final day of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Baylor track and field team claimed eight event titles to establish a new program record as the women's team netted three and the men's squad produced five at the Cyclone Sports Complex Sunday.
Taking the top step on the podium for Baylor was Trayvon Bromell (100m, 200m), George Caddick (400m), Rachel Johnson (3,000 steeplechase), Tiffani McReynolds (100-meter hurdles), Felix Obi (triple jump), Brianna Richardson (triple jump) and the men's 4x400-meter relay of Richard Gary, Kevin Harris, Brandon Moore and Caddick.
The five event title winners for the men's squad were also a program-best and allowed the Bears to finish in fourth for a second-straight season with the same number of points as last season - 93. Meanwhile, the women's three event champions tied a program-high and helped the Lady Bears place fifth with 96 points.
In total, Baylor had 28 competitors earn 44 All-Big 12 honors during the meet with both the men and women having 14 athletes recognized for 22 accolades.
Bromell started off his day by blazing to a 9.91 in the 100-meter dash. After winning last year's title in a wind-aided 9.77, Bromell repeated as champion in the event by beating the field by .07 seconds. Later in the afternoon he cruised to a win in the 200 meters in a wind-aided 20.64. He earned BU's fourth title in the event and the first since Reggie Witherspoon won the 2007 crown. The sophomore sprinter became only the second BU male athlete to win two individual events at the Big 12's outdoor meet (Brandon Couts won the 200 and 400-meter races in 1998).
Baylor's two titles off of the track came from triple jumpers Felix Obi and Brianna Richardson. Both athletes won the triple title at the conference's indoor meet in February and then again Sunday outdoors.
Richardson put Baylor's first title of the day on the board with a jump of 43-3.75 [13.20m] on her fifth attempt. After finishing as the runner-up in 2014, the junior Bear becomes the first female triple jump champion since her coach, Stacey Smith, won the 1998 and 1999 titles.
On the men's side, Obi produced the title-winning jump on his fourth attempt. With a leap of 53-1.75, he became the first BU male to win an outdoor triple jump title. The mark is also the second-best of his career, which makes it the second-best in school history. Obi ads the honor trophy to his three-straight indoor conference titles in the event.
After missing the event final a season ago, George Caddick produced a personal-best time of 45.90 to win the 400-meter dash. He was deadlocked with Texas' Zach Bilderback coming out of the final curve, but was unable to outrace the event's defending champion by .09 seconds. Caddick tallied Baylor's 11th-title in the event in the 19-year history of the meet and the first since LeJerald Betters in 2008.
Tiffani McReynolds nabbed her third Big 12 100-meter hurdle title, after winning it last year and in 2011, by running the second-fastest time in school history at 12.70. She is the first Big 12 athlete to win the event in three different years. She blew away her competition by .41 seconds, after getting off to a great start and finishing strong. The BU senior now has seven Big 12 hurdle titles in her career, after also winning four during the indoor season at the 60-meter distance.
The final title of the day came in the final race of the day as the 4x400-meter relay team of Richard Gary, Kevin Harris, Brandon Moore and Caddick delivered BU's second-straight win in the event. The Bears held the lead throughout and Caddick fended off advances from Texas Tech and TCU in the final 100-meters to claim the title in 3:06.19. It was the 14th time the BU men have been on top of the conference podium in the 4x4.
To open BU's success in the running events, Rachel Johnson repeated as the 3,000-meter steeplechase champion in 10:20.70. Baylor now has three Big 12 steeplechase titles with Johnson's two and Angela Marvin's 2003 title. The senior Bear is only the second Big 12 athlete to repeat in the event, joining Emma Coburn of Colorado.
Baylor also had four second-place finishes and four third-place showings. BU had the runner-up in the 800-meter race on both the men's and women's side. First, Olicia Williams carded her third-straight All-Big 12 honor in the event by running a 2:10.43. Next, Moore, before running the third leg on the 4x400-meter crew, logged a second-consecutive all-league recognition by running a 1:49.24.
Johnson recovered quickly from her win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to place second in the 5,000-meters for a second-straight year with a time of 16:22.46. Junior Bryce Grace added to a successful day for Baylor's hurdle crew as he was the third-place finisher in the 110-hurdles with a time of 13.86 to earn his third-consecutive all-conference hour in the event.
In the 4x100-meter relays, the women's squad of McReynolds, Kehri Jones, Juanita Mainoo and Justise Dayries were third in a season-best time of 45.16. Meanwhile, the men's crew of KD Cannon, Harris, Malik Wilson and Bromell produced a runner-up finish in 39.42.
Along with his work on the both of BU's relay teams, Harris tallied a third-place showing in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.13.
McReynolds rebounded from her win in the 100-meter hurdles to place third in the 100-meter dash only 30 minutes later. She ran a season-best time of 11.29.
