INDIANAPOLIS - Baylor women's tennis players Ema Burgic and Blair Shankle have been chosen to take part in the NCAA Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships starting May 20 in Waco.

The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee made the announcement Wednesday that individually the twosome was among 49 at-large bids into the 64-person singles bracket, while together they are one of 10 automatic selections into the 32-team doubles draw.

The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be held at the Hurd Tennis Center on May 20-25 in Waco, following the conclusion of team championship play.

Burgic, a senior, was ranked No. 22 in the country in the latest ITA rankings and has a 16-5 singles record overall with a 14-4 mark in dual-match action. She is 5-4 against ranked foes. Burgic was selected to the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship, but did not play due to injury.

Shankle, a sophomore, boasts a team-best 26-6 overall record and a 20-2 mark in dual-match play. She is 8-5 versus ranked opponents and was 8-0 in Big 12 action. Shankle has won 11 straight decisions and will be making her first appearance in the singles portion of the event. She is currently ranked No. 37 in singles.

In doubles, Burgic and Shankle are 11-4 overall and 8-4 in dual-match action. The pairing has not played together since March 22. Before teaming up with different partners, Burgic and Shankle beat doubles teams ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the country. In the latest ITA rankings, the BU pairing was ranked No. 12.

Last year, Shankle earned ITA All-America doubles honors by advancing to NCAA quarterfinals with partner Victoria Kisialeva. Burgic was invited to the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship, but did not participate due to injury. She did earn ITA All-America doubles accolades in 2012 with partner Nina Secerbegovic.

As a team, the eighth-ranked Lady Bears will face fourth-seeded Northwestern State, in the first round of NCAA Team Championship action. That match is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center. The winner of that contest will take on the winner of the match between Rice and Tulsa in the second round Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m.
