THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Before inclement weather forced the cancellation of the Michael Johnson Classic meet, Baylor track and field athletes tallied nine event crowns at
Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium Saturday.
What started out as a picture-perfect track day with 2,655 fans packing the new facility to watch some of the biggest names in the track world, quickly turned into a washout with a Central Texas storm preventing the conclusion of five events.
Prior to the storm, Baylor honored 20 members of its senior class and the 2015 Baylor Legend honor was presented to head coach Todd Harbour.
Junior Olicia Williams made the loudest statement on the day as she crushed the 800-meter school record to win that event in 2:03.32. Her mark is currently third-best in the NCAA for 2015. She took down the eight-year old 800-meter school record of Nicole Jones, who ran a 2:04.69 in 2007.
On the men's side in the event, Brandon Moore tallied a victory with a personal-best time of 1:48.53.
In the hurdles, senior Tiffani McReynolds produced a time of 12.93 to blow away her competition by .26 seconds. Her male counterpart, Bryce Grace, won the 110-meter hurdle crown with a season-best mark of 13.70, which is seventh-best in the NCAA currently.
Senior Rachel Johnson opened the evening running session by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:16.69. Running most of the race alone, Johnson dominated the field by over 47 seconds.
It was a banner day for sophomore Cion Hicks. First, she won the shot put title with a personal-best heave of 54-9.25 [16.69m]. That throw moved her into ninth in the NCAA for 2015 and tied for 10th-best in school history. She was also leading the discus with a throw of 159-6 [48.61m] when the meet was cancelled.
In the sprints, Trayvon Bromell shined once again as he claimed the 100-meter dash crown with a mark of 10.02, which is tied for fourth-best in school history. Kehri Jones also had the fastest time in the afternoon session of the 200-meters and after the evening session of that event was not run, the senior ended up claiming the title with a season-best mark of 23.88.
The Bears were well on their way to sweeping the triple jump event too, but the rain ended those plans. Junior Brianna Richardson was able to secure the title on the women's side with a leap of 42-10.75 [13.07m]. However, junior Felix Obi, who was leading the competition with a mark of 51-3.75 [15.64m], but was unable to finish the event before the lightning rolled in.
Rain also prevented Annie Rhodes from completing her series of jumps in the pole vault. The sophomore was in second place by clearing 13-9.25 [4.20m] when the meet was stopped.
With the event's namesake and 400-meter world record holder Michael Johnson watching, BU's top quarter-mile athletes both put up personal-best marks. First, Raena Rhone took sixth in a loaded women's 400-meter field that included Olympian Sanya Richards-Ross. The senior Bears turned in a time of 52.50.
Meanwhile on the men's side, George Caddick blew away his heat to finish second overall in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best mark of 46.10.
OTHER NOTABLES
? BU also had a number of close calls as Kehri Jones was second in the 100-meter dash (11.54), Maggie Montoya was the runner-up in the 1,500 meters (4:18.45), Derwin Graham took second in the 1,500 meters as well (3:47.07) and the men's 4x100-relay team of Malik Wilson, Kevin Harris, Bryce Grace and KD Cannon finished as the runner-up in 40.17.
TOP QUOTE #1
"Overall, another really, really nice Michael Johnson meet. I thought the crowd was just amazing. Two weeks ago was great, but I thought this was even better. I think our athletes, just like they've done in the past, even at the old track, they respond very well to the awesome crowd and want to perform well for them. I think that's what happened today." - head coach Todd Harbour on the meet
